Can you swim?

Can everyone here swim?

I was watching a documentary where some people drown because they could not swim. For the life of me I can't fathom what it would be like to not be able to swim. Would it be like not being able to walk?

I was taught to swim before I could walk. Mainly for safety reasons in case I fell in to the canal or pool where we lived.

I'm curious what it would be like to be an adult and have never tried to swim and then all of a sudden be faced with the challenge.

Now that I think about it I guess this is where the term: "Sink or Swim" comes from.

Yes and I enjoy it every now and then..one of the first things I did growing up was swimming lessons.Every kid should go through ice cold showers on rainy days and jumping in a cold pool treading water in 15 feet of water

I don't think any adult could drown in just a pool - even if you can't swim, you can float.

We also had swimming at the school every Tuesday untill we were 12. Everyone from my school could swim over a mile while fully clothed.

Yeah, I can. Much like others here, I was given swimming lessons when I was really little. I do not think an adult could drown in a pool, but in a lake, or ocean maybe.

I don't think it's because they can't swim. I mean, anyone can doggie paddle. I think it's more they let their nerves get to them, so they do not focus, and just splash away like a madman. So the anxiety gets worse, and then they drown.

I am always amazed when I see a documentary, or something where people are on ships or subs, and then something happens, and it's going down and stories of people who can't swim. I mean, come on.

I was a competitive swimmer for 16 years before I retired. Made it as far as ranking 6th at European Championships. I still go dip in the pool occasionally, but not much.

Funny when people say that they can "swim", for me it means that they can "float". My understanding of swimming starts at about 50 seconds in the 100m free event.

I look stupid when I swim and I still enjoy a nice doggy paddle at the age of 19. Yeah, I can swim, hand over hand fast as fuck, but I'm so worried that I look silly and I'm not doing it right, so I usually just chill in one spot. What's it called when you just chill in one spot and keep yourself afloat by moving your arms and legs? Anyway, I do that for the majority of my swim.

Does anybody want to make out with me?

In boot camp at Paris Island for the United States Marines we had to take a full water course. I kid you not when I say there was drill instructors standing on the sides of the pools with long sticks with hooks up them. Future Marines would jump in, promptly sink, scream like little girls, and then be scooped out like they were a piece of meat. I hate to say this but they were mostly black; The inner city kids had never been swimming.

I grew up with a pool so I was good to go.

Even though I knew how to swim I almost drown once. I was about 3 or 4 years old and was swimming in a pool with my older cousins who were a few years older.

All of a sudden my cousin yells out to the adults "Hey look at Chad he's floating" like i was doing a trick or something. lol (I probably was doing a trick like seeing how long I could hold my breath under water)

I was already turning blue. My grandpa and uncle turned around and grabbed me up by my feet and shook me to drain the water out and I was coughing and crying and they kept shaking the louder I cried. Scared the hell out of everybody.

Thankfully 10 minutes later he threw me back in so I would not have a fear of the water.

As a baby I was taught to swim to the edge of the pool and hang on in case i fell in by accident. My grandpa had rigged a small rope on eye hooks around the inside of the pool for me to hang on too.

Ah the good old days. :-)

Man, that brings back memories . I got MCRD San Diego though; being from Texas (right in the middle) they gave us a choice, beach or swamp... wasn't really a hard decision. But saw the same thing; mostly black inner-city guys freaking out as soon as they hit the water...

Most people die from panic in the water, not from lack of swimming skills.
Although if you can't swim you would panic.

People drown in 1 foot of water.....they panic and lose their orientation I've
rescued some guy out of the water once after a drove in a canal. The water
wasn't deep at all, but people go bezerk. I had to knock the guy out before
I was able to pull him to shore it's quite amazing.

What's even more amazing is that bystanders also kinda panic.....there was like
20 people standing on shore watching the guy drown....they all could swim but
for some reason they all froze.....this happens very often. All people do is pull
a silly face and freeze....they want to help.....but they don't unless somebody
grabs them and gives them specific instructions.....then they'll snap out of it
and start moving. It's really weird....it's not that they don't want to help or
can't they just lose their common sense and freeze.
