Top5 Adventurous Activities to do in Costa Rica (IMO)
Here's a short list for those interested in having some adrenaline-pumping fun, the natural way, here in Costa Rica. Just my own personal opinions/experience of course!
1. White-water Rafting / Kayaking in the Jungle My personal fave, Costa Rica boasts one of the top ten rivers in the world for rafting. At the same time, it is also #3 in the world for most scenic (I think, could be #5). What you want to hit is the Pacuare River, class III-IV-V. There is another section of the river that is class V-VI but I think you must be certified as a team to be allowed on (then again, money talks, so if you want to go there are probably 'ways'). The III-IV-V section covers about 40 rapids over a few hours and features a section between Jungle Walls where you can dive out and swim in the Jungle (AWESOME EXPERIENCE!). You also eat a tropical lunch on a riverbank, just watchout for the Boa Constrictors (I was very close to one lats time). It's not really a dangerous ride, unless your name is IwantU_Jeff Kayaking I'm sure would be quite challenging, but I think you may need certification as well. 2. Mountain / Volcano ATV tours I'd love to get the chance to go ATVing more often, it's so much fun! There is a GREAT spot near the Costa Rica Bash hotel in Jaco, that is geared towards the more adventurous (technical) of you. IwantU Michael and I did it a few months back and loved it! When we neared the top of the mountain, it started to pour rain - making our descent become nothing more than riding a mudslide and trying not to fall off the ridges (we couldn't even accelerate, but simply resort to steering and trying to break). We eventually got back covered in Mud from head to toe, but it was worth it! For those who prefer a relaxed, scenic ride - there are hundreds of those available too in pretty much all areas of the country. 3. Waterfall / Jungle Hiking Tours Let me just say, if you go to the Montezuma Waterfalls - follow the river through the rocks. Don't think like us crazy IwantU folks and suspect there might be a shortcut if you climb to the top of the mountain and go through the jungle. There's none, and making your way back is a real hell of a time (and ultra dangerous!) Most of these hikes ARE worth it though, as you often get to what looks like a small paradise - waterfalls you can swim in, in the middle of the jungle. Some, if you have the ability, can even be climbed to dive off of (usually I only see little kids who look straight out of the Jungle Book attepting this though). It's amazing to relax in such natural beauty. 4. Canyoning, Rappelling and Canopy Tours I have yet to get the chance for Canyoning and Rapelling, but I have done Canopy Tours. Personally, I found it a bit redundant after the first few lines...but it does provide nice aerial views of the jungle and a chance to see a lot of weird animals. However the idea of integrating it with Canyoning and Rapelling, make it seem a lot more interesting: "Experience the newest adventure in a rain forest canyon. Enjoy the tropical wildlife encountered while rappelling down four waterfalls, zip lining down four canopy cables through the forest, descending down a tall tree and walking across a 132 foot hanging bridge giving you an unforgettable adrenaline rush." I'll get to it one day soon 5. Jungle Bungee Jumping One I will definately try soon, is this one. With 265 feet, the Colorado River Bridge is one of the few and highest bungee bridges in the world. In the middle of the jungle. I think the activity will speak for itself, there's not much to say about it Other notable activities include: Surfing, Horseback Riding, hang-gliding, sky-diving...I have no experience yet with these so that's why I haven't mentioned them in depth, but I am going hang-gliding shortly after the Bash is over If anyone wants some specific info, or plans to do any of these activities duing the Bash or their time down here, let me know
