Did you see Crosby's goal early in the ear from his knees behind the goal?

pierre dagenais

pierre dagenais from the montreal canadiens is the future of hockey. hes not the best skater, in fact, most of the time he cant keep his 2 skates on the ice, but he's got a big heart, and most important, loves poutine.

His goal against Phoenix was the BEST EVER. No doubt.

It's only January but that's the play of the year, unless an outfielder nabs a ball in his jockstrap, a wide receiver catches a pass with his big toes or a point guard scores from the dressing room.

yup I agree they are both good
keep in mind crosbys age though, and the team he is on (sure there are some "big names" but not many real play makers, no one is performing). Crosby plays more of a canadian style, and he can set plays up well. Ovechkin would do horrible if he played on an elite team, last time I checked he was almost leading the league in shots on net.

Phanieuf (sp) is great, more valuable to his team? Not too sure about that.. calgary is already a really defensive team. They are bottom 3 in the league for scoring. Imagine what they could do with another 90 points or so from crosby or ovechkin.

I'd have to say Ovechkin is pretty much a total game-breaker.

His hat-trick the other night single-handedly sunk my Ducks....and that Phoenix goal, while partially lucky, was AMAZING

The thing is, he basically plays with zero Caps support. He also plays physical and hits like a train, something very rare with scorers of his talent level.

I do think, in two years he will still be way ahead of Crosby. Although Crosby will probably be better than he is so far this year then, Ovechkin will also have more NHL experience in the same way.

As far as Phaneuf goes, defence does count, but I'd take Ovechkin over Phaneuf any day of the week. It'd be fun to see though, out of 10 tries, how many times Ovechkin would beat Phaneuf one-on-one.

As for Ovechkin doing worse if he had better players with him, I really doubt that. With other threats, it would give him more space as well taking away some of the double-teaming on him (or leaving someone else open for the pass then).

2nd : He's 2 years older then Crosby. Compare both in 2 years from now ;)

I meant more value to any team...GREAT defencemen are very hard to find and usually take alot longer than forwards to play at the next level. Not to knock the 2 offensive guys but most of their goals come when there team is already down by 5 goals, its alot harder to score in tight games.

all 3 are great, also svatos in colorado

Crosby will never have Ovechkin's wrist shot or slap shot, he will never be physical and dynamic as AO. He does have great vision and passing game, other than that Crosby is not even close to Ovechkin.

Being a Caps fan I am biased naturally towards Ovechkin, but he, Crosby, Phaneuf and Svatos in Colorado are all sensational rookies an in an ordinary year would all be front runners for the Calder. With the lockout last year, there are a lot of guys this year who would have been rookies last year (like Ovechkin.) Ovechkin should win the Calder, mostly because he is a year ahead of Crosby, being a year older. Of course, while Crosby was playing for Rimouski in the Quebec league (and dominating like a man playing in a Pee-wee league), Ovechkin was playing in the Russian Elite League and was a 3 year veteran...he was getting more out of his playing time to be sure.

I suspect that Crosby will be collecting MVP trophies later in the decade and the Ovechkin will be collecting Richard awards for leading the league in goals. Plus, I think it is more likely that Ovechkin will win the Cup (in Washington) before Crosby, as the Caps have been building a young team with a bunch of pretty good players (no superstars that's AO's job.) while the Pens are an older team that may not even be in Pittsburgh by 2008. (Kansas City Penguins anyone? How about Portland? Oklahoma City? Las Vegas?)

Colorado has been cranking out talented kids for a decade... check the recent Caldter trophy winners, there was a stretch of 3 or 4 years where they had 3 winners, all the while they were winning Stanley Cups. They were letting their kids develop in the minors as they didn't need them right away (they were already loaded) while bad teams like Phoenix, Columbus, etc. were puting 18 year olds in the NHL...

That, and Colorado spends more on scouting than any other team in the league...

Ovechkin's goal was a beauty BUT the hype that it is one of the greatest goals in history is ridiculous - he beat exactly ONE defenseman on that play and it wasn't all that great a move - the wild swipe he took at the puck while sliding prone on the ice was great instinct but it was a flukey type thing and the goalie should have stopped it. great highlight material but not one of the 10 greatest goals ever.

Go find some video footage of Bobby Orr and Gilbert Perrault - both these guys in their prime would routinely take the puck from their own goal line and beat 3 and 4 players before finishing off goals that were pure art. Add in Dennis Savard.

For one, Crosby is way over rated. Don?t forget where he put his numbers at ? The Q league (stands for queer league). If he was playing kids in OHL he would be toast? literally?
Second, Ovechkin had 1 and a half year behind his belt in russian pro league. I don?t know where you getting your information but as a person who?s closely devoted to Russian hockey I can tell you that all that bullshit about AO?s lengthy pro career is nothing but bread crumbs off Don Cherry?s table.
For skeptics here?s all of AO?s goals this year.. if Crosby can top that in 2 years I?ll have his name tattooed on my dick?
Crosby?s finesse will never come any where near Ovechkin?s. Mark my words. He?d be lucky if he does not follow the steps of Daigle.

this is pretty stupid. did you see him play at the world juniors? crosby is not overrated, he blew that league away at 16. he wasnt like daigle who got points but didn't help his team win. crosby dominated from day 1 and lifted his teammates. great players do that.

not to mention crosby is playing better as a rookie than daigle ever has. plus he did more at 16 in the world juniors than daigle did as a 19 y/o on a stacked roster during the last strike. daigle was a complete no show then while crosby shined at 17.

face it, you can't evaluate hockey talent

Crosby is a good player but needs to mature alot, he whines and cries way too much, he is already getting a reputation like mccabe and tucker, the ultimate whiners.

Also crosby is on a team with a bunch of old guys that are stuck in the old game of hockey, he's not doing too bad, but i do think Ovechkin is better.

I think Eric Staal is better then both of them ;) his whole family is going to dominate the NHL, they are saying Jordan Staal, his younger brother could be the # 1 pick next year and he has like 2 younger than that, lighting up their respective leagues.

Well, ending up like Daigle may not be so bad... he's actually playing decent hockey in Minnesota. Certainly he's not a star, but he plays 15-20 minutes a night and gives a good effort.

As for Eric Staal... man, what a player he is. I don't know if he's in the Ovechkin/Crosby class in terms of talent. He is a better player right now because he's a year older than Ovechkin (meaning he's ahead of AO and Crosby). And Jordan is going to be a top pick and a good player. I wouldn't want to put too much pressure on him and say he has to be as good as his brother.

I will say this, again as a Caps fan (20 year season ticket holder). Alex Ovechkin is the best player to ever put on a Caps jersey. Period. Better than any of the hall of fame players the Caps have had (Langway, Murphy, Gartner, Stevens and Oates who are locks for the Hall) and better than other players they've had (Ciccarelli, Bondra (blasphemy, I know), and Dale Hunter). I've honestly only seen two players who were better at age 20 than Ovechkin is, and you can guess who they are (hint, one wore 99, one wears 66).

Some of you guys are hilarious.

"Ya.. Crosby.. maybe he'll come around". Come around? He's 18 years old and sits 14th in the league in scoring on one of the worst teams in the league. How many points did you expect the guy to get? 200? No, he is not the same type of player as Ovechkin.. but at least let him get to 20 or 21 years old before you call him washed up!

Crosby = 18 Ovechkin = 20 case closed! In 2 years.. Crosby will be #1 in the league...

Remember what Ovechkin did at 18? He barely touched the puck agaisnt JUNIOR players!! Bottom line is Crosby has similar numbers to Gretzky and Lemieux during their rookie year... except Lemieux and Gretzky were 19 ...

they are both Great! Crosby is still a lot younger though. And lets give these kids a chance to play a full season before we judge at least. They are both exciting young players and should help the NHL big time!

Yea its all about Ovechkin.
This kid is unstoppable. That goal was amazing. Best goal I've ever seen.
Crosby is good but has no game on Ovechkin.
He's also becoming quite the cry baby!!!!

Crosby has skills, but he is definitely a crybaby. Everyone of Ovechkin's goals so far have been highlight reel stuff.

Both entertaining to watch tho!

yes I did .. 4 points came on game against Denmark and Slovakia where as AO was an MVP when he was 18.
I also saw Crosby in CHL finals where he was not anywhere to be found playing more agressive and physical team.. will I be hearing more dumb comments from you?

With Ovechkin at the helm, Washington, my favorite team, will win the cup in the near future. Ovechkin should easily win the rookie of the year award.
