The woman that was arrested at the state of the union - her reply

Quote:

Dear Friends,

As most of you have probably heard, I was arrested before the State of the Union Address tonight.

I am speechless with fury at what happened and with grief over what we have lost in our country.

There have been lies from the police and distortions by the press. (Shocker) So this is what really happened:

This afternoon at the People's State of the Union Address in DC where I was joined by Congresspersons Lynn Woolsey and John Conyers, Ann Wright, Malik Rahim and John Cavanagh. Lynn brought me a ticket to the State of the Union Address. At that time, I was wearing the shirt that said: 2,245 Dead. How many more?

After the PSOTU press conference, I was having second thoughts about going to the SOTU at the Capitol. I didn't feel comfortable going. I knew George Bush would say things that would hurt me and anger me and I knew that I couldn't disrupt the address because Lynn had given me the ticket and I didn't want to be disruptive out of respect for her. I, in fact, had given the ticket to John Bruhns who is in Iraq Veterans Against the War. However, Lynn's office had already called the media and everyone knew I was going to be there so I sucked it up and went.

I got the ticket back from John, and I met one of Congresswoman Barbara Lee's staffers in the Longworth Congressional Office building and we went to the Capitol via the underground tunnel. I went through security once, then had to use the rest room and went through security again.

My ticket was in the 5th gallery, front row, fourth seat in. The person who in a few minutes was to arrest me, helped me to my seat.

I had just sat down and I was warm from climbing 3 flights of stairs back up from the bathroom so I unzipped my jacket. I turned to the right to take my left arm out, when the same officer saw my shirt and yelled, "Protester." He then ran over to me, hauled me out of my seat and roughly (with my hands behind my back) shoved me up the stairs. I said something like, "I'm going, do you have to be so rough?" By the way, his name is Mike Weight.

The officer ran with me to the elevators yelling at everyone to move out of the way. When we got to the elevators, he cuffed me and took me outside to await a squad car. On the way out, someone behind me said, "That's Cindy Sheehan." At which point the officer who arrested me said, "Take these steps slowly." I said, "You didn't care about being careful when you were dragging me up the other steps." He said, "That's because you were protesting." Wow, I get hauled out of the People's House because I was, "Protesting."

I was never told that I couldn't wear that shirt into the Congress. I was never asked to take it off or zip my jacket back up. If I had been asked to do any of those things...I would have, and written about the suppression of my freedom of speech later. I was immediately, and roughly (I have the bruises and muscle spasms to prove it) hauled off and arrested for "unlawful conduct."

After I had my personal items inventoried and my fingers printed, a nice Sgt. came in and looked at my shirt and said, "2,245, huh? I just got back from there."

I told him that my son died there. That's when the enormity of my loss hit me. I have lost my son. I have lost my First Amendment rights. I have lost the country that I love. Where did America go? I started crying in pain.

What did Casey die for? What did the 2,244 other brave young Americans die for? What are tens of thousands of them over there in harm's way for still? For this? I can't even wear a shirt that has the number of troops on it that George Bush and his arrogant and ignorant policies are responsible for killing.

I wore the shirt to make a statement. The press knew I was going to be there and I thought every once in awhile they would show me and I would have the shirt on. I did not wear it to be disruptive, or I would have unzipped my jacket during George's speech. If I had any idea what happens to people who wear shirts that make the neocons uncomfortable...that I would be arrested...maybe I would have, but I didn't.

There have already been many wild stories out there.

I have some lawyers looking into filing a First Amendment lawsuit against the government for what happened tonight. I will file it. It is time to take our freedoms and our country back.

I don't want to live in a country that prohibits any person, whether he/she has paid the ultimate price for that country, from wearing, saying, writing, or telephoning any negative statements about the government. That's why I am going to take my freedoms and liberties back. That's why I am not going to let Bushco take anything else away from me...or you.

I am so appreciative of the couple of hundred protesters who came to the jail while I was locked up to show their support....we have so much potential for good...there is so much good in so many people.

Four hours and 2 jails after I was arrested, I was let out. Again, I am so upset and sore it is hard to think straight.

Keep up the struggle...I promise you I will too.

Love and peace soon,
Cindy

Very well-written letter though. She's right on many points.

Looks like that security guy "Mike Weight" likes to throw his weight around.

with women anyway.

Fuck George Buch and all is asshole admins.

I hope she files a nice civil case on them. She lost her child and then she gets arrested for wearing a shirt? Are you serious?

Freedom is the one thing the US is supposed to stand for and now Freedom is being flushed down the toilet by a coke head loser president.

If radical muslims were smart, they would stop attacking the world and just attack Bush himself. Blow up his farm. blow up his administration .. just stop blowing up innocent children and women.

You know, I have always kind of cringed when I heard CIndy's name, until now....what happened was out of line and very scary if you think about it. Basically, what was told to us by her getting arrested is that our freedom of speech is gone. It is only a matter of time before they start coming after random people on the street instead of people sitting at the SOTU

the usa is getting very creepy lately, thank god I have just secured a plot of land in costa rica

You cant blame the security at the event. They were doing what they were told. They did not want to cause any disturbance, so this Cindy was thrown out instead of causing a big scene and dealing with it on the spot.

Jesus christ, what a disgrace. If she has the security clearence to attend the event, she should be able to wear whatever the hell she wants. I consider that to be a birthright as a U.S. citizen and so should everyone else.

One of the many definitions of democracy... "Democracy is a principle whereby people in a country freely elect representatives who make laws and govern with popular support. A democratic government also implies that the people can change a government if they are dissatisfied with it."

yeah right. a live event, from a head of state, televised all over the world and you think idiots should be strutting around in assless leather chaps in the background - and believe it can and actually should happen. i am sure the whole world would be impressed with our "democracy" while watching that.

sure you can!!!!... watch..

The security guard was wrong..

What exactly was his basis for throwing her out ? he obviously either A) didnt do his job properly or B) was under direct orders to illegally arrest someone..

If the security guards were "doing what they were told", what exactly where they told ? "arrest anyone who publicly disagrees with us "

He was under direct orders to haul anyone out that might be a disturbance. I wouldnt be suprised if they let her stay and half way into the speech she jumped on the stage and attcked the President.

You may have interpretted it differently. I for instance see someone wearing a shirt saying 2,245 Dead How Many More, as in insult to our troops.

I love the people who put the blame on the president. Looks to me like it was just a security team who over reacted no?

And cmon she needed to be kicked out and I bet that she even wanted it. That can easily be considered a disruption. The sad part though is that the security guys basically fell for her little game and overreacted. Like her usual game she is trying to get a rise out of people.

And cmon she needed to be kicked out and I bet that she even wanted it. That can easily be considered a disruption. The sad part though is that the security guys basically fell for her little game and overreacted. Like her usual game she is trying to get a rise out of people.
They create big big big non riot perimeters arround each speech he does so everybody looks positive. It's censorship at it's finest.

Actually I'd go as far to say that she supports our troops more than those who wear a "Support our Troops" t-shirt. Atleast she wants our troops home and not fighting for fucking idiots who burn down countries over a comic. Others blindly support a war that we shouldn't be fighting.

You need to realize that the most people on GFYs have no business and no brain lol.
It is very interesting how people turn into exactly what they dislike. No matter what happens its George Ws fault and the freedom of speech is going away. Do people not realize that the government has gone through changes like this during its history. Look at how after World War 2 you were not allowed to make movies about WW2 in the states. And there are many other stupid little things like that.

This is a freaking live event and there is no need for any type of disruption like what she would have started. If she wanted to attend the event for just listening to it why did she wear that shirt? She wanted to start a commotion and I am sorry but no matter what or where that never goes down.

Censorship my ass, its called common sense. There is no debate going on between the president and the crowd. Its a speech done by the president for the United States. Why would you want to intoduce people rioting or protesting during the speech? I mean what if people started getting up and chanting during his speech? People who disagree have plenty of ways to get their opinion across.

It is censorship when you remove 2 persons only on the base of a T-Shirt ... The T-shirt doesn't talk and I am sure it will not attack the president.

The posters was refering to what is known as the " town hall meetings " where for one all participants are polled and asked to sign a waiver and secondly where protesters are kept miles away in enclosed " security area" ...

You are in dire need of an update.

Have a read .. if you are capable of it:

Quote:
He wrote about Bill Neel, a retired steelworker who dared to raise his humble head at a 2002 Labor Day picnic in Pittsburgh, where Bush had gone to be photographed with worker-type people. Bill definitely did not fit the message of the day, for this 65-year-old was sporting a sign that said: The Bush Family Must Surely Love the Poor, They Made so Many of Us.

Ouch! Negative! Not acceptable! Must go!

Bill was standing in a crowd of pro-Bush people who were standing along the street where Bush's motorcade would pass. The Bush backers had all sorts of Hooray George-type signs. Those were totally okey-dokey with the Secret Service, but Neel's...well, it simply had to be removed.

He was told by the Pittsburgh cops to depart to the designated FSZ, a ballpark encased in a chain-link fence a third of a mile from Bush's (and the media's) path. Bill, that rambunctious rebel, refused to budge. So they arrested him for disorderly conduct, dispatched him to the luxury of a Pittsburgh jail and confiscated his offending sign.

At Bill's trial, a Pittsburgh detective testified that the Secret Service had instructed local police to confine "people that were making a statement pretty much against the President and his views." The district court judge not only tossed out the silly charges against Neel but scolded the prosecution: "I believe this is America. Whatever happened to 'I don't agree with you, but I'll defend to the death your right to say it'?"
come back and tell me that this is not censorship ... but common sense ...
