when domain names go BAD!

there are alot of bad domain names out there being used on the internet, but some bad domain names have actually become a success, despite being utterly bad. My pick goes to yahoo.

its not even a word....but they made it a household name with genius marketing and lots of $

who else has made the leap from being a bad stand alone domain name, to becoming an internet darling?

do you yahoo?

the name has to be catchy and easy to remember. having millions of dollars to advertise helps as well.

I think Yahoo is a word. It's one of those words old people use. "You yahoo, darn you!"

yahoo is a catchy name, its an easy name to market, but if your starting an internet portal way back when, when there was a lot of good names available, "yahoo" would not be on the top of my list....

it sounds like a great name now, but think of how many weird looks they prolly got back then when they picked it out as their domain

When yahoo first started out it didn't even have its own domain name. It was on http://akebono.stanford.edu/

Yahoo actually is an acronym for:

Yet Another Hierarchical Officious Oracle

Which is better "Yahoo" or "Akebono"? My vote goes to "Yahoo".

I saw Akebono in person two summers ago and he was a huge mother fucker. He had to be at least 6'6" and fat/ripped. I saw him at a Sumo practice (in a small area where there only was about 100 people watching). He was picking on one of the smaller Sumo. I think Akebono is retiring soon or has already. He is getting rather old for a Sumo (he's about 30 now I think).

actually, now, i wouldn't change a thing, for obvious reasons
but back then, there was many more safer choices
like search.com
portal.com
hit.com

yahoo is a very unconventional name, to say the least.
