Being a rep is just a sales job. Your customers are webmasters.
Like any other sales job the 80/20 rule applies.
80% hardly make shit and the other 20% are doing quite well.
I know one rep who makes way way way more than 100K. Of course this rep's accounts bring in over 10K joins per month to the program that they work for and their contact list is just sick.
I do agree that most reps don't make shit though. Way too many of them are failed webmasters who figured being a rep is the only way they could make a living and stay in this biz.
I can see how being a rep or working for a large company in some fashion can help you build your own personal sites if you have time to do both.
I would imagine having an @adult.com or @topbucks.com email address would help alot when trying to get people you don't know to trade links/traffic or give you a discount on content or bandwidth or whatever.
Plus I'm sure there are lots of things you can learn much quicker about the program side of the biz if you're working for one of the top programs.

Very true, but I've also found that many reps have no urge to make their own sites, which is fine and I can totally understand that: Leave the work at the office at 5 pm= peace of mind

I think it depends on the company. I know AFF likes me to keep things as seperate as possible - so I do my traffic deals and all my IMs from home, on seperate accounts.... many of my affilaites don't know my personal stuff, and the people who do know it, knew me for years before I came to work here.
