Photographers- Lighting Question

We have an unusual scene tonight and don't quite know how to light it.
Two pale girls wearing baby pink on a white background.

Any suggestions how to shoot it so that the pink (and pale skin) is still visible and not washed out?

Light the subjects and the background separately. 1 stop up on the background and underexpose the subjects 1/3 stop on the key light and 2/3 stops or more on the kickers.

Emmanuelle, this is going to be a tricky situation. If you can get away from using white background with light skinned people - that of course would be best. If you can't - consider doing this:

Go to the fabric store and pick up some black fabric. Hang the fabric on each side of the girls (as shown in this illustration). Get it as close to the girls as you can without it being in the picture. Place your mainlight directly in front (flat lighting). The black fabric will act as a negative fill light and tone down (darken slightly) the outer edges of the girls skin and that will help to seperate the edges of the girls from the *bright-white* background. This is done a lot in the Glamour/Fashion industry. If you have some time, experiment with not using the fabric and then with using the fabric. You should see a BIG difference.

Good luck!

spot meter the skin, adjust strobes to not over expose the backgrounds (if you want).

easy.

jewel colors go best with pale skin, pastels tend to wash out more.

Dean... I sent for info on your site regarding a private lesson. I did not hear back. Do you not do this anymore?

If so, please let me know where you are at so if I ever pass through that way, I would love to pay you for a class or two.

Hey DWB - I'm running a little behind in answering some of my emails that don't require immediate attention. I didn't forget about ya' - just haven't had time to hit you back

I really don't have any time right now (or in the near future) to do workshops or private lessons. I have my hands full right now getting production off the ground and running for Twistys and it looks like I'll be busy for quite some time

You should be able to find some photography workshops in your area though - try googling "photography workshop Los Angeles" (or whatever city your in).

Good luck
