i think it's because sig whores' jobs are to scour the boards, post a lot, and the success of the sig whore depends on having something to relate to other people by. if they just post annoying 8 character responses in every thread their click rates won't go up, people will get tired of seeing them, used to them, etc. if they have something to post *about* the chances of their sig being clicked goes up exponentially, especially if it's about someone that a lot of other people know and will be compelled to click on.
