do a trace to a few sites and see what routes you take.
the bigger isp's have direct connections to the major backbones.

you can do it right from your computer. Get a command prompt and type in tracert (space) domain name

This command will only show you 1 route, you need to try a few location to see how many or what best routes are there, use these link (lookinglass):
http://www.nyi.net/traceroute.html also http://www.fixedorbit.com/welcome.htm will show some of hs peers.
