    Spam Friend Or Foe??

What are your thoughts on spam? Is the gov. making too much of a big deal about it. Junk mail is not illeagal, why is it illegal on the web? I think Spam is an important part of our bizz. Yeah I hate getting it too, but it works . We are all spammers of one sort or another. What are your thoughts?

No one should be for kiddy and beast shit, thats just wrong.. but I really think the us government is just too rough on spammers. We of all people should not be cheering when a spammer gets years in jail, and it seems a roar of applause goes up from here when someone gets busted.

Spam is like feeding the gulls at KittyHawk circa 1902. You just can't measure the cost to human life... yet.

          tada!

Spammers don't contribute anything to this world, they are about as useful as bank robbers...

spam is just a waste , chews up bandwith , resources , and with get out of the mailing system pretty hard , i mean atleast with the " no junk mail sticker you shove on your mailbox " if someone drops junk mail in , you can take em to the courts

with spam on the other hand , if you click the "unsubscribe button " all it really does is show that the mailing address is valid so they can selling the mailing list off again

a friend of mines gets bombarded with a couple thousand spam emails a day , causing legit mail to get deleted in amongst the pile of crap , which courses loss of time and workload

so in short , we should bring back stoning , shove all the spammer in the town square so everyone can stone them

Let's look for ways to make people who engage in bad behavior UNABLE to participate in the benefits of the greater legitimate society. I was always impressed by those sci-fi movies that depicted a future where the outlaw could not buy food or get on a bus, just because he was "out". No matter that he was "free" or had a pile of gold in the desert. Y'all think all this trust shit from Google is weak. It ain't. What if your own "trustability" is a function of what you do AND what the people you do business do?

I couldn't agree with you more. I am so sick and tired of all the fuckin junk mail I get all the time. That's where the government needs to be spending money and resources regulating. As long as what is being advertised in the E-mail is legal I think it is much less of a hassel and does less damage than junk mail.

a lot of people hate it but enough people like it to make it profitable. i rather delete 100 spams per day than have to deal with asshole telemarkets who just won't get the picture. also you have to consider the amount of job spam has created, the amount of money it brings to the economy (spammers pay a lot of money for hosting, domains, ect) as well as pushing technology further by forcing spam filters to improve or be useless.

people should be allowed to send mail to those who optin to such lists. of course i don't agree with harvesting or hijacking computers but its the anti spammers who have taken away all resources and forced spammers to use such methods if they want to continue doing what they are doing. if you love or hate spam you can't disagree that the law is out of control when it comes to spammers giving bigger judgements against them than huge corps who violate all sorts of human rights and enviromental laws and harsher sentences than child molesters and rapists.

I can see this issue from all sides any all people with a stake in this have very valid points.

From a government perspective, the vigilant approach to curbing spam makes sense as a protection to the US Postal Service as well as a political statement in the protection of the consumer. The truth seems to be that spam is an economic threat to the junk mail industry, that while annoying lowers the costs of other snail mail we send and recieve because it's a staple component of revenue for the USPS.

However, as a consumer, I'm perhaps in the minority. I don't really mind taking a few minutes to delete errant email. It's not a big deal. Call me a sucker but from time to time I've seen junk email that has an offer that's valid and actionable. So there is a value.

At the same rate I don't mind tossing my AOL free trial CDs. I appreciate the offer, I'm just saying no thanks.

Sure it's a waste of resources to toss all of that junk mail, and perhaps recycling measures need to increase.

Junk email and junk mail are both facts of being an American and living in a capitalist society.

Should email be regulated? Absolutely. To what extent though remails the question.

I think all junk mail should be banned.

With email spam, it clogs bandwidth, and costs corporations millions / billions a year in IT costs and lost employee productivity due to dealing with sorting through their email. I think I waste an hour a day (aggregate) sorting through and removing spam from my email accounts.

I don't know why those who complain they waste so much time deleting spam don't install a program like Spam Assassin. The number of spams recieved went from 500/day to 5! There is no excuse, if you leave your mail program open to accept whatever comes by what do you expect?

as for bandwidth being clogged, you must be talking about hijacked computers? because otherwise i don't see how it clogs anything. lots of hosts out there would be much poorer without their spam clients, though they will never admit it. like i said i don't endorse hijacking pc's but if it wasn't for the aggressive methods anti-spammers employ such as blacklisting anything and everything, regardless if they follow can-spam laws or not there would be no need for such things.

It takes me 15 seconds to delete spam. Less time than it takes for me to sift through junk mail.
