laptop screen dimming

I know this is a power saving function but it is very annoying. On mains power by screen is bright and viewable - switc to battery power and it dims to the point of being unreadable.

I have looked at the power settings but can't see a way to change this behaviour (behavior) on a dell inspiron 6000.

Any clues anyone?

Isn't that handled under Power Options on the Control Panel?

I have a Dell Latitue that does the same thing, but most of the time it's plugged in.

Your problem isn't a "Power Options/Control" issue (at least i don't think it is).

My tablet did the same thing when i first got it...but it's fixable.

It's a built in feature called "auto-dimming" or "auto adjusted ambient light"
(i think that what it's call).

Anyway, in theory when you switch to battery mode, the laptop lcd will auto-adjust the screen lighting (and the clarity) to work it's best with the current lighting conditions.

So if you're in a dark room, the lcd should get brighter or dimmer based on how dark it is. And if it's bright where you are like when you're outdoors, the lcd should clear up and get a bit brighter so you can see the screen, etc etc.

The feature normally sucks though under most lighting conditions, which is why i turned the feature off. So it sounds to me like your laptop has this feature...so just disable it. Go to any laptop board and do a search for dimming or ambient light. You should find some information on how to disable it.

If your laptop doesn't have this feature, then i have no idea what the problem could be...maybe a faulty screen or something.
