Techies: How do I network two windows machines?

I'm buying a new machine and I just want to network it with my old machine. Both will run w2k server but I have 0 idea how to do this. I don tknow what hardware and software I'll need.

I also currently have my machine on a cable modem and I want to put my new machine on dsl with a different isp, so if 1 isp goes down I'll have another highspeed connection available as a backup. Have any of you ever done that and had any problems with it? My cable modem connection is starting to go down a lot more lately.

Cool thanks!

If I want them to have seperate internet connections with seperate ips then I won't need the 3'rd network card, right?

2 Nics
3 Cat5's
2 Hubs
2 Patch cat5s

Bah - didn't come out.

Machine one - nic via cat 5 to hub1
Machine two - nic via cat 5 to hub 2
Hub one to Hub 2
Hub one to DSL
Hub two to Cable

Messy, but works

Why two hubs? You can do the same thing with 1 four port hub.

This is correct... all you need is the cable... and network card if they not built in... Myself I prefer intel network cards....
I think I would have started with win98 networking though..
2k is a bit harder..
I also prefer a router. if your networking more than 2....

Both of your internet connection should be no problem...I don't know about when 1 goes down though.... My Cable modem, I have to set it up and when I had DSL it was Diff... As both are always on.... Have no ideal..... if 1 goes down there will be some setting up.

MS site and search peer to peer and also look in the Win2k help for the same. You can do that with the crossover cable and 2-12 buck network cards. No need to get the ones that cost a fortune. It's a piece of cake that way. If you use a router than you have to deal with internal IP setups which can lend some gray to your hair.

save yourself alot of trouble.

get one of those linksys dsl routers or anything of the sort.. usually around $75.. shares the internet connection, blocks your ports, runs NAT and has internal DHCP server built in.

MUCH better solution then any peer to peer crap.

2 nics in the main computer
1 in the other
cat5 cable
hub

windows ics/internet connection sharing
your done.

the reason i set it mine up is like this is u can plug a notebook into the hub if you want

also on the main computer make sure you buy different types or models of nic cards, when u set up ics you need to specify which nic is connected to the internet. makes it easier.

my setup:
main computer
1 linksys nic v100
1 linksys nic lmsomething

dsl goes into one nic
other nic goes to hub

other computers into hub
firewall on main computer
