I am giving the Dell 8500 to my dad i reformatted it n shit. I am looking for something lightweight and for traveling basic shit like checking email and so on. Lmk what you guys prefer and so on.
i consider em throw aways. i mean they are like 400-500 bucks a pop now. fuck format, fuck upgrade, use em till they smoke then dump em, get 2 more.
Very true, I think I paid like $3k for my Sony 3 years ago and sold it a year later, because I hated it. Picked up a dell for like $600 and have had it ever since. Dells rock.

I am not sure how big of screen you need, but if you need lightweight, fast and reliable. Here is the best of the best in that area. IBM X SERIES They all weigh around 3lbs.
I love the HP laptops. they are great. But they are heavy
Have you thought about getting a MAC for travel. All you really will do when traveling, is to check mail. post on gfy stiff like that. So it wont be much of a change.

they have great thin laptops.
nah tbh never looked at Apples......How much of a bitch is it learning the OS n shit?
RRRED had a thread about this and everyone in the thread threw around "Dell, Sony, Apple".
I just got my first laptop six months ago and didn't go with any of those companies, even though the IT guys I work with recommended them. Once I found out that there are only a few companies that actually build the original parts that most main-stream, known dealers use: Those "alienware", "falcon-nw", "dell", etc, etc are all built from the same manufacturers who just add to it. Like "sager" being the base for some high-end laptops of which they just upgrade.
So I went to http://discountlaptops.com/ and chose an Asus z70 because it had everything I needed, was want I wanted in a portable computer and had a solid support base for troubles. **Note, apparently DELL's support is stellar (next day keyboard replacement, next day [whatever]), which I can't have with my generic laptop.
I fucking love my generic laptop. It's not bulky like the Dells, it doesn't suck up battery life like the Sony; it's just a solid laptop for what I wanted. The battery life rocks, the speed is stellar, my 2Gb of ram helps with anything I need; I could go on for a while about that shit.
Anyway, that's my story about the lappy I write this post with. When I need a next laptop, it won't be from a mainstream company. The price I paid for the hardware I have in this laptop far outshines any other mainstream company re-selling the same.
i just ordered a Dell lappy (should be here monday) but if i had the extra coinage to throw around, i would have sprung for a toshiba satelite. you cant go wrong with those. Dell was my 2nd choice. Toshiba would have been my first.

The Toshiba Portege is very lightweight. You might want to check that one out.
If you're going to be traveling a lot, Sony has this itty bitty one that is very lightweight.
I am rough on laptops, so the slightly heavier Fujitsu has worked out very well for me....it's a 15 inch and weighs about 6 pounds. Good for travel and home, which is what I needed.

Unfortunately I can not agree with that in my expirience as a tech in Future Shop, Toshiba warent that best at all. ofcourse they are beter then ACER's, but Id say that right now they are on the same level as the HP.

Toshiba. Bought mine in 1998 and I still use it for email/chat/etc. It's pretty much been turned on 24/7 since I purchased it and I've never had any problems with it, despite treating it very badly at times (dropped it, knocked it over, etc) ..

As much as people dislike them, I have been very happy with my HP Pavilion. 15.5 inch screen and a gig of ram make it totally enjoyable. It is huge and heavy though...
