Help me make the most powerful AMD computer.

My friend wants to build me a computer from scratch (he has built several).

I will spare no expenses.

I am sure many great parts have come out recently, anyone have any suggestions? I am going to do some research, but it will be a AMD processor since that is superior to Intel...

Also I heard about the AM2 processor that AMD is coming out with in June, has anyone heard anything on it? Is it worth the wait till June?

Any guide out there that lists the most advanced/best parts out there now?

to be honest unless you want to spend alot of time tweaking it all the time i would go with one of the topline ones you see in pcmag ( like piece by piece ) because they will already have been tested for conflicts.. as precise as computers are , when you match the wrong pieces for whatever reason , they just dont work well with each other, you end up doing alot of trial and error putting together a masterpiece without a game plan

go for dual opterons or dual fx-57 then. you may want to decide if price is really no object, ive seen some workstations that cost well over $15,000 to build.

AMD superior to intel? Unless your friend is a gamer go with intel since intel is better to run software. If he's a gamer go with amd. Don't say AMD is superior to intel.

I can't believe you would suggest a Tyan quad opteron mobo combo. From your suggestion I have to conclude you know nothing of building PCs. That you just went and found the most expensive mobo/cpu combo on your parts page and suggested it.

You can't just say "build me the most powerful AMD computer". Are you looking for a gaming rig, work station, server, supercomputer. Each one is going to need an entirely different parts list.

If you want to just build a computer using the best retail hardware out right now. Anotherwords, best cpu, best vid card, best sound, etc etc etc. I will give you suggestions as to which parts and manufacturers to go with.

I would suggest a SLI mobo (I prefer ASUS).
FX-60 for gaming, or dual core for work station (dual core is not good for gaming, it's good for a software work horse).
SLI 7800 GTX OC cards (PNY is prob my favorite, XFX/BFG make good cards as well).

As far as what I will use the computer for, it will be mainly for running software, but I do want to play games on it as well. Would there be a big dropoff in performance with a dual core compared to
fx-60 for gaming?

Also, would it be worth it to wait for the quadro core that AMD is coming out with in June?

The FX-60 is dual core. When I was comparing dual core for workstations, and FX for gaming. I ment the older FX chips, as the FX-60 is the first FX chip with dual core - and it's AMD's best chip out right now. So if you want "the best cpu out there" get the FX-60.

Compared against each other the FX-57 and X2 4800+. (Which is what I ment when comparing the dual core vs fx chip). Run at the same level. In most instances they complete tasks in the same time frame. But like I said, for software/workstation type stuff, a dual core generally performs better. Where as the FX chips would run a gaming system much better. BUT there is always variables and such which might make one run better than the other. It's not a simple "this one is faster". There are too many variables to make a definite answer.

So, if you can wait till June. I would say wait till June. Just to see what AMD comes out with. If you are going to buy now, go with the FX-60.
