Is there a way to recover a stolen laptop? A frined of mine got his stolen from his car. Can it be traced if you have the laptop ID or something?

maybe have microsoft trace the windows serial number?
always install dyn DNS on the notebook so always beable to trace by IP, or contact the ISP if they turn it on, and receiving mail, probably able to trace it via IP address.....
if they using cable ot dsl, or dial up on that matter.

Either some douche stole it for a quick buck and it changed hands quickly, or if the person knew what they were looking for and snagged it they've wiped and reinstalled the OS. Even with the windows serial number you won't get anywhere. Microsoft isn't in the business of tracing stolen computers. They can't keep track of all the pirated copies of windows which costs them millions, so I highly doubt they'd give a shit about a $2000 laptop.
