moving to the US ?

say I'm freakin' tired of freezing my balls in Canada and want to move down south to the US.

is it easy to do as a self-employed adult webmaster ? I generate enough cash to be able to live in the US but a quick look through the various visas makes me think I don't fit anywhere in there! ( not a temporary visitor, no US employer is hiring me, etc )

how can I go about moving to the US and eventually becoming a citizen ?

DISCLAIMER: This is not meant as legal advice. For proper legal advice, consult an attorney in your jurisdiction.

There might be several ways:

Enter under a student visa. Go to school. Find a job training program with employers that will petition you. Many software/Net companies used to this. Find an employer that will sponsor you. Once you finish the educational program, you switch from the student visa to the sponsored employee visa (H1B). At this point, you put in more time and eventually ask your sponsor to file for an employment certification for you. The employment cert will qualify you for Permanent Residence (Green Card) status.

Other variations of the steps above apply to the tourist visa as well.

Other possibilities: If you are a BIG TIME webmaster, there's the E visa which gives you a green card if you are able to start a business in the US that employs X number of people over X number of years.

I know you're self-employed BUT if you become employed with an adult company that wants to open a branch in the US, you might be able to enter under an L visa provided they set up a branch in the US and your position is managerial/executive, etc.

(Again, this is NOT legal advice, so consult with an attorney in your jurisdiction that handles this body of law.)

The important thing about getting into the US, staying in, and changing status to PERMANENT resident then US Citizen is this: DO NOT FALL OUT OF STATUS. Don't let your legal status lapse or else it would be ONE HELL of a hassle and yes, you'd be technically an illegal alien. After 9/11, removals (previously known as deportations) have skyrocketed.

One possible saving grace is the BCIS' 247i waiver system. This used to be quite liberal and allowed people who have fallen out of status or committed fraud re their immigration paperwork etc etc to get a waiver and clean their status and get on the road to permanent residency. This has been WEAKENED A LOT due to 9/11 (understandably so!).

You have to be ALREADY LEGALLY in the US to join the service though.

There is one exception (that I know of): When the US Navy had a base in the Philippines they had a quota for letting Filipinos join the Navy and Marines. Filipinos can join the Service and serve and get permanent residency then citizenship. My aunt's husband migrated to the US this way back in the mid 60s. This was phased out a long time ago.

is it also the case that if I were to become a US citizen, I have to renounce to all my others citizenships ?

Get profesional legal help, I have held an H1 for many years and have worked as a mechanical engineer in the U.S. there is a lot of papper work and it is far better if you have a degree of some sort, so that you are importing some skills.
education is a must and a sponsor employement wise is a good start, however there are fewer and fewer that will sponsor you these days.
Tax laws are also a pain under a H1 unless the company you go to has a Canadian arm that can pay you here.

Can't say I know for certain sheken, but they sure hate dual citizenship irrespective.

Other possible slight problems are that once you become a citizen, from that moment on, irrespective which country you may live and earn in, you will still be required to file tax returns in the US and pay any amounts due. This is one of these freedoms you already have in Canada - ie. they don't expect you to send taxes back home if you are resident and working abroad.

I'm kinda in the same position as you in that respect and I sure would not give that up for anything.
