Could The Adult Industry Survive Without GFY?

The idea that GFY has so infiltrated the adult industry that most webmasters and companies daily check in for information, comments and news that it has become necessary.

The questions are:

Could we could survive without it or would the attention be given to another board?

Was GFY inevitable?

In the future do you feel GFY has become too 'surfer' based and that it may loose is usefulness and split in two - one board for surfers and another for industry persons?

I think that we all love to make money and that we'd find a way to communicate with each other even if GFY didn't exist.

As to it being too surfer-based, we just ignore them anyways, so what's the big deal?

many boards have come and gone without so much as a hiccup to the biz..
90% of the threads here are basically off-topic as it is... and it's getting harder and harder to sift through the bullshit to find the nuggets.

Gfy Isn't a staple, I agree it's a nice change of pace to talk to friends. But Before GFY there was Porncity, before that Ynot. I don't think GFY controls everything, it's just the most popular of the message boards (adult)
If they decided to close shop one day people would migrate to another message board, or better yet, actually work a little harder.

I sure as hope the adult industry don't rely of GFY for "daily checks" on the biz!

Man.. there is a massive world out there actively involved in the "adult industry" and, can only, guess, but most have never heard of GFY and unlikely to spend time on GFY or many other boards.

As a rough guess, over 90% of the folks I know who are active on net related parts of the adult industry have never posted on GFY and rarely, if ever, visit.

Got to agree with ya that the surfer mentality is alive and kicking here But... there are also serious biz people.

GFY is like the office water fountain - a gathering point.

excellent analogy - I agree as well but in some of my conversations I have heard people refer to GFY as though it was the only board they make money from much less meet industry persons. I myself am on over 30 boards and moderator on 2 well respected ones. But when you hear people say that careers and companies are made and broken here, or that their success is solely attributed to this board, makes me wonder.

I myself feel the adult industry would merely gravitate to many of the other boards - but the surfers and those with attitudes would hardly survive on them simply because they refuse to allow such behavior and personal attacks happen. Many who call themselves industry leaders would suddenly disappear because their antics would not be acceptable anymore.

The industry would survive without a problem.

But, lots of fast food chains would soon soon be rife with new complaints from customers stating that when placing their orders the little bastards behind the counter were saying "O'RLY?" waaaaaay too much.

why do you need boards at all? from 98-2003 i never posted on any, may have checked out porncity and ynot a few times but not even enough to sign up. made more money in those day too.

GFY is okay for mostly mainstream porn - but the best online webmaster forum for stuff like fetish and bondage is actually a Yahoo group that's been operating since 1999. It has a few thousand members, several hundred of which are photographers, producers and webmasters.

I won't mention the name here since its against GFY rules. Its not difficult to find if you're resourceful.

No. The adult industry would crash and burn. Thats why Playboy had to beat out the Department of Justice on bids over GFY. Hef was afraid if Gonzales won the bid no man would ever have a hard on again.

There are some things in life that become part of our lives, so if GFY weren't around anymore, it would be missed....just like I miss living in the Tri States, with New York as my playground.

Still, my life would continue if GFY were not in the picture, which in no way diminishes GFY.

I also miss soft pretzels sold on the corners of Philly. And steak sandwiches. Decent pizza.

Now, you've gone and gotten me all nostalgic, Robert.

LOL.. that made me giggle.

I am in agreement, and don't wish to appear that I am against gfy in any way - I was merely curious as to some comments that I have heard that without gfy a persons standing in the adult community would be gone - or that many who rely on this board to create and maintain a personality would suffer greatly since much of what is said here would not be allowed on any other board.

a very good observation and maybe that is why I have heard many speak so highly and desperately about this board - without it, they would fade into the background.

I am not saying that business cant be done on this (or any webmaster) board - I myself have even today had a sign up because of GFY - and as much as I respect the owners and how they have created this monster - I just hope that people realize not too take it too seriously and build their self worth and reputation on GFY.

That would be correct sir

But then again it leaves the impression that they are new to the board and that most also be the impression they are looking to give otherwise they would use their main nick wouldn't they..
So I assume it's a new guy just for the fun of it.

I made a shit load of money BEFORE I found GFY. I also make a lot of money offline in the adult industry where most of them have no idea GYF is here, nor do they care.

Sure there is some business to be made here, but these days it's less and less.

IMHO, GFY now is mostly for ego-maniac webmasters who feel the need to be someone in the cyber-world, wanna-be webmasters and surfers.

or maybe the person (like hundreds of others on here) with the new nick is just someone with multiple companies that doesn't want to cross promote them, and logs in and out each time they need to post something relating to another company

you can think I am new all you want...LOL...those that need to know, already do

there will be always another board to take it place. gfy is only here because people want to talk. they got in on the right time with the right profile that webmasters like. Without gfy there will be still biz and another taking over.

Mmm.. apart from sponsors trying to drum up with some hype, do you think it matters what the persona of a person on a net board is?

I know some folks here... but lots more in the adult biz that never or rarely visit GFY - and they don't really give a fuck whether they are "known" or not.

There are a number of *actual* biz people around on GFY and a larger number of.. "assortments" from basic trolls, others trying to get a clue, others who have a clue and say little etc.

Also... Doctor Dre is 100% correct, tho think it's far more than half never look here.

WTF are you talking about ... half of the people in this industry don't read this board and are succesfull.
The world of adult webmasters and their success rate sure as hell does not revolve around GFY.

MrPheer is also 100% correct:

The industry did just fine before this cesspool GFY started and it will do just fine when GFY is gone.
You need to ask some folks, but suspect/know they are same as me and been in adult for decades before the net or GFY was every heard of.

think about it from the other side though, there are TONS of personalities on this board and a few others that would NO WHERE instantly if the boards all the sudden shut down

there are a lot of users of boards that have built everything from boards alone, and there are even a few here and there that continue to use the boards as their sole survival technique

I am not saying it is a smart business plan, but unfortunately, it does happen

to be honest, almost all my business recently has been done with people that have nothing to do with the boards except reading them on an inconsistant basis....i have been doing it the old school way, picking up the phone and networking

GFY replaces a the water cooler for alot of us, you work in your office or home alone. This gives you a place to socialize. In the short time I have been on GFY it has changed its focus, when I first got on it was more serious ,more biz.

Think about it this way. Message boards are a source for newbies. Newbies who are taught to do things a certain way. TGP, Link List, Free sites, blah blah blah. Webmaster message boards do nothing but stifle industry wide competition and innovation and slow things down with all the dead weight and lost productivity in terms of million of man hours.

EDIT: oh yah 50 bitches
