The Ruler Of Dubai Died In Australia Today

Sheikh Maktoum bin Rashid al-Maktoum, the ruler of Dubai and one of the most influential men in horse-racing, has died today while on a visit to Australia's Gold Coast. He was 62.

Police in Queensland said that Sheikh Maktoum was staying at the exclusive Palazzo Versace hotel with a retinue of 33 people when he died. It is understood that he was on a private visit to attend yearling horserace sales.

Emergency security clearance was granted to allow the emir's personal Boeing 747 to fly his body home from Brisbane as quickly as possible, in compliance with strict Muslim customs on the burial of the dead.

That's a huge loss for the arab states. He put the middle east on the map as a real tourist destination.
