I'll be honest ... I did once ... I was 19 I think or about ..maybe 18 ..my girl friend was at my apartment and we were breaking up ..it was a bad month .. Well, that's his viewpoint, not mine. I never hit my bf put I've yelled at him and pull him back during our intense fights, he never hit me hard, but my bf has the view point that it's "ok to slap some sense into a woman" at certain times, but rest assured I'm not some poor battered woman or anything. He doesn't mean hit as in knock them out, but just lightly slap a bit of sense into "them"... lol
Probably not the healthiest relationship but you can't have it all in a relationship. Some men proclaim they would "NEVER" hit a woman, but then they have other faults such as they cheat, or flirt with other women.
Basically no one is perfect, if it's not one flaw it's the other. I wouldn't be happy with a guy who is perfectly gentlemanly and never cusses at me and gets physical with during fights but cheats... So basically I think it's really difficult to find a man who is perfect, so I accept his flaws.
I never hit him, but I've yelled at him and tried to get attention by pulling him towards me because I wasn't done explaining something... But I've never hit my bf first, he thinks it's enough reason to push me or something of the sort if I just touch him during our fights, like if he says "leave me alone, don't touch me" and I keep doing it (because I'm a glutton for punishment) he'll react by pushing me hard or something like that.
I have never hit him first because I'm not a violent person, I admit I may be a whiny and bitchy person at times but I'm violent physically. My bf is more hot tempered though and he doesn't believe women should get special treatment "just because they are women".Comment

Also I think it has a lot to do with how a guy grew up and what their parents relationship was like. For example, my ex parents were not violent with each other (as far as I know) and he's real close to his mother and was kind of pampered growing up, and he never hit me or called me names during our fights... I think his upbringing has a lot to do with it. But he DOES have other flaws like lying and a ton of other stuff...
The guy I'm with now grew up in a dysfunctional home his parents were violent, his mom and dad used to throw knives at each other (I heard) and his dad kicked down the door and I think punched the mother in the head till she bled, so perhaps that's why my bf has the views that he does.
I think upbringing has A LOT to do with it.Comment
