Figure I ask a SEO question see if I can get a direct answer..

Rather then searching google and other seo boards.

Whats the setback with having a Vitural Host. With a shared IP??

Is there a magical # of domains on 1 ip/shared host? That will hurt your listings?

Say I pick a phrase "online dating" and target 10 domains for that phrase?

Just building my site with hardlinks ect chances of getting that keyword anywhere near the top 10? Google? Yahoo? ect?

Simple.
If you use a shared host, and some idiot gets the IP banned form google, there go your listings.

To be safe, if your going after the same term then by all means use seperate ips, or even say a batch of 4-5 virtuals for the 10 domains.

BUT in all honesty shared IP's are NOT penalized, more like what happens on that shared IP, more like the who and what, not the where.

Many will post that im wrong and that seperate ips is a must, like i said..to be safe use it, but its not just using the virtuals that get you busted, its creating a network all on one ip.

Build unique sites, with unique content and it wont matter if you have 10 sites relative to it on an ip (see blogger for confirmation of this fact). Just make sure its not the same network, and that doesnt just include cross linking them, but also the individual links to each site. (ie 20 dif sites linking to each of your 10 domains)

If you have multiple sites on the same IP, and interlink them, Google will see them as internal links and give it less value.

There is no drawback to using a virtual server over a dedicated.

Your question is a little complex, but are you suggesting that the virtual plan you have has you sharing an IP with someone else?

Don't worry about subnets

Dude, did you happen to notice the date on that? You don't think things may have changed over the last couple of years?

A thread loaded with incorrent info. Why someone would go to a hosting board for SEO info is beyond me.

Duh? Sure there are obvious inaccuracies - and these are commented on. Basically unless you happen to work for Google in the backroom - nobody has a clue as to the current scenario or any in the future. It's a matter of learning shit from all sources and making up your own mind.

Hehe yeah I saw the year and I also thought things do change specially with google.
But I mean,my guess is that most websites in the world are hosted from virtual accounts (maybe I`m totally wrong here). Why would google penalize people for hosting in virtual accounts with the same IPs?
But they are not stupid either so 100 links all from the same IP to one site might not have as much weight as 100 links from different IPs.

I did post that, but didn't dare put a direct link ... Didn't want to be flamed by mods for posting another forum ....

Google is not dumb. They know what SE spammers ( or scammers) are doing and adapt to that . Content is now very important.

I have a site, on a virtual account on one of my boxes ( about 125 various mainstream/adult sites ) that gives back a top 10 google position with " fisting dvd " as key words. Now, that site sells tangible goods, fisting dvds .... I have no real backlink to it ( it is not my major site) ...

I would like , at one point, to hear and read actual factual reports of how those IP scammers are really doing ... not just urban legends ....

If Webby wouldn't have quoted that, I wouldn't have seen it since you are on my ignore list.

from my experience, Google is LIGHT YEARS ahead of Yahoo and MSN in terms of weeding out spam. I don't think either Yahoo or MSN will be able to really get a handle on the scammers when they release their respective 'adsense' programs. (is yahoo out of beta yet)? as soon as they do, everyone who was kicked out of adsense will flock to Yahoo.
