Because when he started out he was getting a 30% return for his investers... in a market where 7-11% was the norm. Also beleving that great fortunes shouldnt be passed on from one generation to the next (he plans on leaving his estimated $40 billion fortune to his foundation). He diversified into insurance when berkshire-hathaway was first a textile firm.
