                          I read the Ruskies are demanding that Ukraine pay $230 per 1,000 cubic meters of natural gas. Isn't the current rate somewhere around $50 per 1,000 cubic meters?

                                      its part of a dispute that has been going on for over a fucking decade with Ukraine refusing to pay market prices. they wanted their independence, they got it... if they want gas, they have to actually pay for it now.

                                                                      you are reading it wrong. the current market value is $230 which russia wants them to pay. they arent asking them to pay 4x what others pay.

                                                                      Russia's state-controlled Gazprom gas monopoly argues that Ukraine should pay $220-230, more in line with world prices and portrays the demand as putting the gas sphere in line with market-economy demands.

                                                                      Ukraine doesn't argue with the market-economy theory and Yushchenko's office said he told Putin Tuesday that he supports price liberalization. But Ukraine wants the price increases to be phased in over a period of five years.

                                                                              I understand that $220-$230 is the market price. My main point of contention is that the Ukraine is locked in at $50 until 2009, but are willing to negotiate up prior to the expiration. Gazprom (Putin) is not willing and taking a hard line.
