Internet connection on the road

What's the best way to go online while you travel with a laptop? You know, staying at several different motels and hotels for a week or two. Is there something else like AOL, but not AOL . . . where you just need to find a local access number?

Thanks

i am a huge sheraton user. most of their hotels in N.America all have high speed access. i travel alot, and i've found them to be the most consistently wired hotel overall (high speed access). not in Amsterdam though

i find dialup completely useless - haven't used it in years. (too fucking slow to be useful)

Get a nationwide 800 dialup number from someone like Earthlink and you can jack your modem into any truckstop at the restaurant booths. They all have phones that you can pluck off the wall and plug into.... I did it for years.

if you're gonna be in hotels exclusively and not have access to the truckstops, again.... a service like Earthlink... get their regular monthly lowball plan, and they have a list of local access numbers on thier site.... print the list before you take off, and wherever you are, just look up the local number for that city and away you go.

That's actually one of the only reasons I keep AOL otherwise do your research ahead of time....

I also have an account with a company called wayport.com but they are only in certain hotels. Nothing like getting high speed when you are travelling though.

I found AOL tends to be better than most national ISPs, just don't use their browser, it's designed with some kind of shit that makes you IQ drop 5points each time.

I don't do much traveling, but I found this interesting. I was at the Trop in Atlantic City.

Their nicer (newer) rooms are in the west tower. I always try to stay in that tower, but am not always able to.

However, if I call and tell them I need internet access - they ALWAYS will give me the west tower - as the other ones don't have it.

I bet some places are the same. If they have updated some of the rooms - you are more likely to have internet access in the better rooms.

So from now on - I will always ask for a room with a dataport - just to hopefully get the nicer room.

Don't know if it really will work, but hey it is worth a shot.

I also use AOL for that purpose. AOL is also good for testing out sites - especially sites with popups. I HATE their browser, but millions of people use it - so it is good to test out sites to see how the look in it.

Thanks for that Trop info Chris. When they give the Comp rooms they are always in the Old tower. Now I know what to ask for!

Or I could just lose about $10,000 or more. Then I'm sure I'd get the new rooms.

Most Wyndam hotels offer ethernet connections for just 9.99 extra (free if you are cool to the front desk person!)

Plus they have the most comfortable beds of all the chains.

If you have to stay at a chain, always choose Wyndam over the other chains like Marriott and Hilton.

~Back to the original question... Have you thought about using a mobile phone data connection adapter? 56k speeds dialing into your existing AOL account (or anyone else's if you have to!) You can get one for around 50 bucks. If you have one of those free nights and weekend plans that should be all you need!

Porn Wolf,

Yeah - I was getting the poker room rate and they do the same thing. Now I know what to do - and the west tower is real close to the poker room

sheraton does not = marriot. costs 10 bucks a day - i guess it depends on your budget, but 10/20/50 bucks/day - doesn't matter. high speed access that always works - that's all that matters (for my business).
