The EU basically inferred today that they WILL take other means as needed to insure that Israel retreats. Wiping out the whole infastructure as they seem to be doing as if off a shopping list will just make that area even more unstable. A picture tells a 1,000 words...NOT! Thinking back to Rodney King..we saw an african american get beaten...what we didn't see was King's extensive arrest record..nor could we see in the future when he would continue to commit crimes. The world was maddened by the King episode, but if we were all police officers and had to deal with that kind of common scum on a daily basis, our sympathys would probably be quite different.

Death walks in and camps salute new martyr

As both sides reeled under the blows of the latest bombing horrors, Paul McGeough travelled to Haifa and Jenin.


Terrorism. It walks in off the street and destroys lunch and lives.

And in its wake, an overpowering sense of helplessness - an awed, angry crowd gathers around the cavern of death that until Sunday was this port city's crowded Matza Restaurant. They tear at their own souls and at the face of Palestinian leader Yasser Arafat as they seek understanding, solace and revenge.

This ritual of horror is well practiced now - it emerges that no-one really noticed the bomber slipping into Matza's, because despite an unprecedented wave of bombings there was no security staff. The police wring their hands - Inspector-General Shlomo Aharonishky states the obvious: "We're doing everything we humanly can - but it is impossible to be everywhere".

And as religously-trained volunteers of the Hessed Shel Emet organisation painstakingly gather body parts from what is left of the rafters, floors and walls of the Matzo to ensure burial according to strict Jewish rites, a media battalion lines up its cameras on the apron of an adjacent service station, filing reports, that with another suicide bombing near Jerusalem will book-end the evening's new threats from Prime Minister Ariel Sharon.

He told Israelis in a televised address: "We must fight this terrorism, in an uncompromising war to uproot these savages, to dismantle their infrastructure because there is no compromise with terrorists."


Fifteen people are dead. They include an entire family - father, mother, and son, who had been having a quiet lunch. They include Carlos Wegman, a 50-year-old engineer who came to Israel from Argentina almost 30 years ago and who was planning his second marriage in the coming summer.

Forty-six were wounded - scattered to three local hospitals by a fleet of ambulances. Half of the wounded have serious injuries, and yet, all this does not reveal the full horror of the attack on the Matza.

Seventeen-year-old Yuhuda Aigzer does: "I was just about to go into the Matza when I was thrown to the ground by a massive boom. Everything was on fire. I saw one man with his hair on fire. A young boy with his face covered in blood. There was blood and glass everywhere."

Another bystander, Shimon Sabag, said: "Watching people on fire is just horrible. I heard an explosion, I went into the gas station and I started to deal with the injured people. I couldn't deal with the critical injuries so I turned to the moderate. I tried to put out the fire, even the moderately injured were on fire."

In a country where there is so little trust and so little goodwill between Jews and Palestinians, Haifa is renowned for the harmony that exists among its people, evidence of which could be found in the Maztza restaurant and service station complex in Haifa's Neve Sha'anan district - it is owned by a Jew, but managed by a Palestinian family from Galilee - at least one member of which died in the inferno.

And in the midst of all the hard talk as darkness embraced the Matza, a lonely voice in the confusion that is life, war and politics in Israel, struggled to be heard from her bed at Haifa's Ramban Hospital.

Twenty-seven-year old Sinjana Wakid who was being treated for minor injuries suffered in the restaurant blast, said, "I came to the country seven years ago and I am Christian, Jewish and Muslim.

"My grandmother on my father's side was Jewish, and her husband was a Muslim and my mother was Christian. The person who blew himself up was not crazy. They say the Arabs are crazy but it's not true. It's someone who saw the same pain that I saw today and did it out of what he saw. They also feel pain. Those who blow themselves up are not terrorists, they are soldiers.

"They come to take revenge. I don't justify them. They make a lot of mistakes. I have all three religions in me and I don't want to stay here. Sharon's old and doesn't care that young people are killed, and Arafat is the same - he doesn't care if the young people commit suicide.

"It's well-known that what's done to Muslims, like in Chechnya, brings revenge. And a Jewish boy, who cries on his father's grave, will grow up with hatred and seek revenge."

The Matza bombing was the fifth in five days and as Israelis brace themselves for more such attacks, the blame game is easy because various militant Palestinian groups claim responsibility for the suicide-bombings.

Yesterday, the three groups usually involved, all issued statement - Hamas and Islamic Jihad claimed the Haifa bombing - the Hamas claim was the more credible; and the Al Aqsa Martyrs Brigades claimed a second bombing which killed one and injured three at a Jewish settlement near Jerusalem.

Some Israeli authorities accept Palestinian claims that Yasser Arafat does not have control over the bombing activities of Hamas or Islamic Jihad. But despite claims by the Al Aqsa Martyrs Brigades that they plan and execute their activities in isolation, their membership is drawn from Mr Arafat's own Fatah faction of the PLO.

Mr Sharon now holds Mr Arafat entirely responsible for all the bombing, denouncing him at every turn as a terrorist. He, and US president George W. Bush, have demanded that Mr Arafat go on the Arab TV networks again and call for a halt to the bombings in Arabic.

He did that in December - to no great effect. But the Israelis also are demanding that the now crippled security forces of the Palestinian Authority arrest those behind the bombings and keep them in jail, instead of occassionally rounding them up and later releasing them.

Hamas official Abdel Aziz Rantisi told Abu Dhabi television yesterday that the suicide-bomb attackas would continue until Israel ended the siege of Mr Arafat in the West Bank city of Ramallah. He said: "We will continue the martyrdom attacks on Israel until the full withdrawal from Palestinian territory."

Late yesterday, as the emergency crews were clearing the Matza rubble, calls of celebration went out from the mosque loudspeakers in the refugee camps at Jenin, on the West Bank and about 50km from Haifa, to announce that the perpetrator had been 18-year-old Shadi Tubasi, a resident of the camps, who had acquired an Israeli identity card by marrying an Israeli Arab.

It was tense in the refugee camp on the outskirts of Jenin, in the north of the West Bank, when hundreds of locals crowded into the local youth centre to pay condolences to the family of Shadi Tubasi and to celebrate his martyrdom.


This was a ritual too - driving to the youth centre meant avoiding mounds of earth on the road, which the Herald was informed had been mined in advance of an expected Israeli incursion, and overnight new grafitti had been drawn and special postcards printed to honour "the one who did the heroic Haifa explosion."

But 52-year-old Zakaria Tubasi, the father of the bomber, was feeling anything but heroic. He said: "I thank God that my son is a martyr, but I'm not happy that he is dead.

"No one thought he would do such a thing. I don't know if he left a message, but he was not politically active and I did not see anything in his behaviour to tell me he might do this.

"His life was difficult because of the way we live - he had no job and he was depressed."

And the dead in Haifa? He shrugged in resignation: "They are the same as us - they too are human beings." His son had been dead for less than 24 hours and the nearest Mr Tubasi came to making a political statement was this: "If there is peace, everything is possible".

In the cyclical action and reaction of this crisis, the Iraqi leader Saddam Hussein, last week started giving an extra $US15,000 to the families of suicide bombers as an encouragement, according to those who distributed the cheques on his behalf, to young people to volunteer for the suicide bombing missions.

Last night the Israeli Cabinet came up with a bid to counter that - it called for a report on the effectiveness of deporting the families of all suicide-bombers.
