SERIOUS QUESTION about and email I got.

Ok so normally I click "send/recieve" and watch as dozens of spam and junk mail pour into there boxes. Alot of the times Norton will pick one out as warn me about an attachment being a virus. No biggie, just part of doing biz online.

But today I got a warning from Norton about an attachment to an email, when I looked at the email it caught my eye because the adress is came from was [email protected]

The message read:

Dear Sir/Madam,

we have logged your IP-address on more than 30 illegal Websites.

Important:
Please answer our questions!
The list of questions are attached.

Yours faithfully,
Steven Allison

++++ Central Intelligence Agency -CIA-
++++ Office of Public Affairs
++++ Washington, D.C. 20505

++++ phone: (703) 482-0623
++++ 7:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., US Eastern time

The attachment is a .txt (247B) that norton deleted.

The email address it came to was "mailbox@******" to an email addy attached to a dummy URL that we don't use.

Now I want to hear from people. Is this for real? Is this really from the CIA or is this just a creative way for someone to give out a virus?

I would like to hear thoughts, opinions, and experiences please.

Thanks

Check the headers and see where it's really coming from. Obviously it's not real.

Its obviously the CIA...

No, seriously, do you really think that the CIA sends out emails? I hope not... they ALWAYS knock at your door when they want to talk to you... just like the FBI or the local police.

You only need to worry if you visit illegal sites. They log your IP, or at least that's what the email says.

So if you don't visit illegal sites you have nothing to worry about.

Hey understand that I don't necessarily believe it is from the CIA................................but then I am just not someone who trusts my government either so I always expect the worst out of them.

Call that number and you'll see that apparently this is a pretty common thing as it's the real number to the CIA but on their recording, they say "If this is regarding an email from Steven Allison, please contact your local web provider..."

I get about 4 a day. They are sent out under the FBI name also as well as the CIA.

And yes look at the original headers because it is NOT coming from [email protected]. ;)

Ok

#1 Of course I don't visit illegal sites.

#2 What a wonderfully innocent view you have on law enforcment and the US government. So if you have done nothing wrong......................you have nothing to worry about and no one would ever hassle you. Nice.

You and a few million others, although I don't think I have seen the email in a week or two. It was talked about on the news when it first hit.

I do understand that it can be disturbing getting a mail like that, if you're not sure if its real or fake!

When in doubt...delete without question. If they are really trying to contact you...you can trust...they'll get ahold of ya.

Yea I believe this is a program called "Internet Head Start" where the CIA gives you an email warning that they're coming after you, giving you a "Head Start" to start running. Good luck in Mexico!

Its a scam. The FBI put out a warning about a similiar email going around that said the same thing word for word except it used FBI instead or CIA.
From the FBI website:
http://www.fbi.gov/page2/nov05/emailscam112205.htm
or
