We need 2 HEAVY Database servers setup. $75 for the person that can give me advice.

Just got off the phone with a friend who recently started a new company
and needs some backoffice expansion.

He takes care of the billing needs of several telco's and needs 2 database servers to deal with about 10 mil transactions per day.

This is what we know:

- 2 servers
- at least 250 gig storage RAID (for example... 2 for the OS other 2 for data etc etc?)
- 2 gig ram seems sufficient with current testing model.
- both servers should be identical (one master second slave duplicated).
- will run freebsd / mysql
- total budget $10k.

What we dont know:
- where to get a system as described above. (we could go the dell/hp/ibm etc solution route but having a custom system build on specs is an option too.. you tell me).

- less important: what would be the best way to set it up (specificly the RAID setup and server duplication).

* Important detail: customer is based in europe and wants to be able to purchase the hardware local.

if you are 100% psoitive you can put a setup for us on paper drop me an email: [email protected] .

I use to work for Sprint.

They used Oracle -- and they had over 40 million customers..

Oracle is great with highend hardware but application was already written for MySQL.

If I were moose I'd punch you in the mouth for saying that name. But I guess any publicity is better than none right?

If you're planning on 10 million plus database queries a day,
you should really consider a rewrite

Cant help locally.

But I spec'd out a hellacious database server for our NATS installation for our program. Very similar capabilities to what you describe above, though my concern was more about redundancy and making sure I never lose a single transaction, let alone any data.

LBBV and the crew at Natnet understood exactly what I was after and were able to get it online very quickly. It smokes.

Bringing oracle into the picture is a whole new ballgame for the expertise and budget area.

Id say if that was necessary and it was my project id do it since its basicly the heart of your operation.

Unfortunatly i was simply asked to come up with some hardware specs.

Yes....

10 Million transactions a day and he asks a GFYer to give him advice?
It might be a good spot but ya had better see how much he is paying for real info.

Or let me guess...

This super millionair dude has no idea how the internet works or what database is nor any clue about what Networking starts with. Of course all super heavy weight dudes are totally clueless and relie on the dregs of society to go out in public and ask the real questions about making his Super uber billion dollar business how to fucking network.

Get a clue.

I thought Oracle solutions were designed for SQL? MySQL must be a Windows variant I am assuming.

Anyway, one more bump. I'm sure you'll get everything you need.

AlienQ can't help himself from being an idiot 24/7 so how would he answer your database questions?

I know a millionaire that couldn't tell you how their simple local database system works. The same one they paid 30k for 5 years ago. You see millionaires have this magical thing called money and they can get whatever the fuck they want with it and not give a shit how or why it works as long as it does.

Get a clue.

10 million transactions isn't that heavy. That's only a bit over 100 transactions per second. We do that on a couple of our databases....not the affiliate program unfortunately (yet!). My guess is GFY does that or more, probably ALOT more if the ads are being served out of the same database as the board.

I've managed to squeeze 120-150 transactions per second out of a single P4 2.2 Ghz box with FreeBSD and Mysql. That requires some tuning of both the database and the SQL the application is sending though. Slow transactions will kill you at that level. And mysql tends not to spiral but rather just hits the wall hard and doesn't recover until volume subsides.

Mysql is pretty powerful and can tote a load. I dont know if they still do, but Yahoo ran under Mysql for a long long time.

Unless you've got a long term budget, I wouldn't go Oracle, not only do the costs of the software and hardware kill you, but you really need a DBA on staff or at least on call 24/7. And smart money has two of 'em.....in case one gets sick or quits.

You can not get a fault-tolerant system handling 10mil transactions a day and 250gig of space each raided for 10k.. forget it.

Anything anyone tells you you should get, it will not be fault-tolerant.

I would get 2 NAS (SAN or DAS) systems with at least 500gig raided (raid 6 most likely) each. Those alone would cost you something like 6-8k if you find them cheap. Then you would need 2 servers on top of that to handle the mysql dbs themself. Each one most likely dual p4s with 4gigs of ram. Get freebsd5 and mysql 5 installed and attach them to the DAS systems via NFS. Use one for master, one for slave. Do all writes to the master, all reads from the slave and the master. That would be rather fault-tolerant, but would cost you around 15k.

If you need details, let me know. I can post more.
