You "Web Designers" Should charge $75 / hour..

... to make $40k a year :-)

http://www.jdempsey.com/2005/12/14/d...uch-to-charge/

nice article for everyone who is charing "$25 for a full website package" and is asking himself why is not making money. then again this article does not really apply to all the bulk designs out there

I never charged less than $100/hour while freelancing (and never less than $1,600 for a tour). It helped me earn my current salary...over $100k.

Creative people should hire accountants. From what I've seen very few with the creative gene have any business sense at all. Then you have people like Franck saying a few hundred for a tour is expensive.

You're fucking kidding right?

$75 / hour for someone pushing pixels around in Photoshop with their mouse?

Fuck.

I hope no one's taking that article seriously.

I don't like how the price is calculated. $40k per year is a normal salary for some designers and it's a HUGE salary for others. That means, the latters can work for less and still do a great job.

No man. I won't.

In the past 10 years, in a few different industries, every single designer I have had to work with has just irritated me and my fellow co-workers; all of them causing the same irritations.

However, going on a generalized tirade on this board won't help and I'm too tired to get into a flame war.

Contact any of the top mainstream designers and they wont do nothing for that rates!

there are some guys out there that they dont accept prejects with budgets under $2500

sad, but it's true

I think $75 a hour is a good rate for a very skilled designer.

Designers don't only fuck around with software, we also have to think of new styles, effects which requires inspiration. Inspiration can be retrived from holidays, drugs etc. So basically this is a must.

Not to mention a designer that doesn't do anything but design every hour he can get websites build pretty easily, in a few hours to just a few days.

I'm not talking about a team of designers, that's a whole diff thing.

First of all, psili you are such a bastard.. You are saying designer doesn't deserve their salary ? I call bullshit. It takes time to become a good designer, experience is something you need to build. We deserve our salary.

What I think is bad for all the designers, is the fuckin' outsourcing. Those cheapass build websites for 2$/hour, so we need to reduce our prices to become competitive.. that's killing us !

Doing design isn't easy... If you're trying to design unique things that not only look good, but sell, that's a skill. Advertising agencies in the mainstream world get paid 10 times what the equivalent in this industry do for exactly the same purpose and position. It's certainly not something that isn't serious business, or an "easy" thing to do. If it's so simple, so easy, should be so damn cheap, why doesn't everyone DO their own design then? There's a simple reason for that. Think about it.

And doing good designs doesn't mean you can MARKET anything either. Marketing is an entirely different bag, and there are only few designers on the market that do BOTH design and marketing well.. In a proper advertising agency, they wouldbe two different people/departments, but the successful designers in adult these days have to be both. That's a learned skill, not something anyone can just pick up and do.

Bingo.

And to those taking offense to my comments about designers not deserving $75 / hour:

Maybe I'm jaded, but in every job I've had, I've had to work close to designers. And it was hell. The ones I've worked with took things too personally, took too long to deliver, had horrible ideas for UI, and were difficult to work with.

Basically, it left me feeling they were all a bunch of worthless, latte-sipping, mac-using elitist pansies.

If you don't fall into that category, don't take offense.

Thats like saying : Nuclear Physists don't deserve such a high salary, they're just pushing atoms around.

Good designers are rare. Not anybody can do a good design job.

Personnally I'm no designer, but a video editor. I see alot of people that can cut up clips, but don't have the extra artistic flair or technical know-how or marketing edge to bring that clip to a whole new level.

I on the other hand have been working in mainstream for years and have thoroughly studied the subject and mastered the craft.

Everytime I hear some twat tell me : "Wow, you're too expensive. I know guys in india that can do your job for 3-4$ an hour", I laugh cause I know that they wouldn't recognize Quality if Quality took their 2 remaining IQ points, rubbed them together and tried to start a fire! If you can't recognize good work, chances are, you can't recognize the shittiness of your own work.

So before you belittle another person's craft, ask yourself first : Could I do the same?

Then ask yourself : Why would they ask for such a salary?

Well... same reason top athletes get paid millions, same reason why Mercedes cost so much : They are at the top of their game and can perform better than anyone else. Therefore they are a rare commodity. And what makes a rare commodity cost more than the average commodity?

Business 101 : Fucking supply and demand.

i think most of the people that do paysite designs on a regular basis like wyldesites, dickmans, webinc, etc and the quality they produce and what you pay for 1500-2700 range and the amount of sites in their portfolio 40k is peanuts
