Webmasters are a bunch of fucking thieves

Seriously, it's true. Any programmer who's ever made some script that's free in exchange for ads/hits/whatever knows it. I'd say at least 50% of webmasters using scripts like that see no problem at all with removing the ad part.

If you don't know this well-known fact, you're a fucking noob.

Here's a nice random example of guys it happened to though:

no need to call someone a "fucking noob", because you made a seemingly random post. if you recently got fucked, spill the beans so the rest of us can avoid the slaughter.

I'm not saying you specifically are a fucking noob, just saying that if you don't know this well-known fact, you are one. Most programmers that have made scripts that were free in exchange for skimming have bitched about this quite regularly in the past, so if you have never noticed that, you literally must be quite new to the biz.

This is not about anything recent, just got reminded of people who did this with scripts of mine (years ago), when I saw the site I mentioned above.

I think you're being a little harsh with the 50%. 25%, maybe. Most of the webmasters I have met (that are established webmasters) have been pretty decent people. The ones that aren't established and want everything for nothing are the ones that are fucking theives.

they should stop calling those scripts "free".. because they're not.
Personally I'd rather pay for a script without a siphon built into it.

Yeah, the 50% is an exaggeration. I'd say it's about 10-20%, for a realistic figure.

The problem aren't just the new ones though, some well-known webmasters do it too. I remember one who once asked me to please help him remove the 1% from his CJUltra. I hope Lane enjoyed the 10% I set it to

Obviously paying for scripts is better, and well worth it in almost all cases. But, if you're going to use a free one (without an initial charge, at least), removing the % is a pretty scummy thing to do.

                          You are worthless

A shepherd was herding his flock in a remote pasture when suddenly a brand-new BMW advanced out of the dust cloud towards him. The driver, a young man in a Broni suit, Gucci shoes, Ray Ban sunglasses and YSL tie, leaned out the window and asked the shepherd, "If I tell you exactly how many sheep you have in your flock, will you give me one?"

The shepherd looked at the man, obviously a yuppie, then looked at his peacefully grazing flock and calmly answered, "Sure."

The yuppie parked his car, whipped out his notebook and connected it to a cell phone, then he surfed to a NASA page on the internet where he called up a GPS satellite navigation system, scanned the area, and then opened up a database and an Excel spreadsheet with complex formulas. He sent an email on his Blackberry and, after a few minutes, received a response.

Finally, he prints out a 150 page report on his hi-tech, miniaturized printer then turns to the shepherd and says, "You have exactly 1586 sheep."

"That is correct; take one of the sheep." said the shepherd.

He watches the young man select one of the animals and bundle it into his car.

Then the shepherd says: " If I can tell you exactly what your business is, will you give me back my sheep?"

"OK, why not." answered the young man.

"Clearly, you are a consultant." said the shepherd.

"That?s correct," says the yuppie, "but how did you guess that?"

"No guessing required." answers the shepherd. "You turned up here although nobody called you. You want to get paid for an answer I already knew, to a question I never asked, and you don?t know crap about my business. Now give me back my dog."

I agree. He generalized the webmasters community. It's only a matter of finding the right people...and you should always give the benefit of the doubt.

Well, if they remove the link then don't they vilolate the license agreement for using said free script? If so take them to court for illegally using your property.

The common thing to do would be sending a C&D first, and if they don't (C&D, that is), you'd sue them. However, that takes time, lawyer's costs, and if they're in other countries it's almost impossible to achieve anything. And even then it is hard to catch them all - especially when it's hard to actually prove they're screwing you, even though it's quite obvious.

I'd say 50 % of them see no problems, but only 10 % of them know how to do it ...

Most webmasters aren't webmasters, they just run websites.

However, that takes time, lawyer's costs, and if they're in other countries it's almost impossible to achieve anything. And even then it is hard to catch them all - especially when it's hard to actually prove they're screwing you, even though it's quite obvious.
Well I see only two solutions then.

                                            1) Stop making free for link style scripts unless you don't mind getting ripped off. In which case it's more a matter of taking your lumps and dealing with it.
                                            2) Make your script a commercial script. If it's good enough to rip off why not charge for it?

Also as someone else said, most people that remove links from free scripts are small fish. If they were serious about their rep and worth 3 fucks then they would not risk being outed for ripping off a script. This does not describe webmasters as a whole.

I actually quit making scripts like that years ago. That doesn't change the fact that it pisses me off that many webmasters steal like that. It isn't just the small ones either, though. Back in the CJ days, I knew tons of big ones who did it.
