Could you have passed Gr.8 in 1895?

Was looking for something for PHP when I came across this:

http://www.barefootsworld.net/1895finalexam.html

9 reasons for use of a capital letter?
I got 5:
1) Name of a person
2) name of a place
3) name of a thing
4) start the sentance
5) start of converation

I know I'd fail - no internet then to look this stuff up

But makes you wonder what has happend to school systems....

What are the following, and give examples of each: Trigraph, subvocals, diphthong, cognate letters, linguals?

6) abbreviation (Est.)
7) acronym "GFY"
8) Emphasis "STOP!!!"
9) Prefix to a name "Mr" or suffix "Jr"

Also consider:
The names of the days of the week, and of the months of the year, are written with a capital letter. Also festivals, holy days, time period (like 'Renaissance')
The first word of a direct quotation
Roman Numerals

I dunno what you guys are talking about, those seem like very basic questions to me.

But then again, I wasn't schooled in America... or even in English!

A trigraph is a combination of three letters representing one sound. An example is eau as in bureau.
A subvocal is beneath the voice, a silent or nearly silent sound.
A dighthong is a complex vowel sound made by gliding continuously from the position of one vowel to that for another within the same same syllable. An example is (ou) as in down.
Cognate letters are related in derivation, for instance, i and y.
Linguals are sounds articulated by using the tongue, for instance the sound th

The Algebra I help my 6th grade son with today is stuff I did in High School.

The English homework he brings home is pathetic.

Are we getting smarter??

Maybe on certain subjects that are prevelant as Evil1 alluded to.
