Should I hotlink - please read
I used to own 2 websites that I decided to stop running. I canceled my account with the hosting company 6 months ago.
I have not touched my old sites or server in 6 months. Today out of bordem I decide to look them up and they are still active. One of my domains has a long time yet to expire. The hosting company has not deleted them from their server + I still have FTP access. Unreal, I can still upload. I got the idea of uploading a few graphics from my current site then hotlink them but I don't want to get some serious fine. Is it legal for me to do this? Just crazy I can still login after 6 months of closing my account. What would you do in this situation? It also appears the websites are getting about 300 hits per day. |

You should check to make sure they're not still billing you. 9 times out of 10 when it works its because it's not cancelled.

That way if they say anything to you about it say you were just trying to save them some bandwidth.

I have never cheated a sponsor or spammed in my life. Believe it or not. Not everyone from ontario is some lowlife. Look at the murder & rape rate in Toronto then compare it to any US city of equal size. |

Ok LoveAsianChicks, I want to ask you a question.
I sold one of my domain's and it just happen to be the one were all my banners were hosted... Now the person I sold it to KNOWS Shit... Nothing about being a webmaster... and Has no ideal all my other sites are using his B/W serving my banners... Ok Question.... Do I let him keep serving my banners. Why not treat the ISP like you would want to be treated... Am I over your head here????

Jimmyf - I have decided not to abuse the host in anyway. They have left it active and not me. Maybe they are aware its active and just letting the domains expire or something. The website is getting traffic and I have some graphics up. I planned to delete everything except the index file and some 404 re-direct script to direct the site.
In 6 months the domains go. Is that not what you would do? How much bandwidth would an index.html page use with 1 line of text on 300 hits? |

If you don't want the domains anymore I'll take them off your hands if the hits coming in are for adult related sites.

By taking down the graphics and putting up a redirect you will be saving the hosting company money. If you are making any money off this traffic you could see if the hosting company will let you have a "one page website" consisting of just the redirect page for a small monthly fee.

ok my last post in thread.
Turns out I had left about 12MB of stuff online but I cleared it all out just now. Directing traffic straight to a paysite and I won't touch the site again. Less then 20kb is uploaded on the server and its only getting 300/daily at max. Wish to hell I was doing this the last few months, just stupid on my part. I'll just ride it out until the host decides to cutoff the site or the domains expires. |

asking if hotlinking is ok is like asking if stealing is ok. if you don't already know the answer to that then saying,"I have never cheated a sponsor or spammed in my life" doesn't really carry much wieght, now does it?

Why not just change the name servers on the domain? Have the domain already setup on a new host before hand, mirror the site, and then you'll have control over your traffic then.. and the hosting company really can't say anything..

Why redirect from the host... you didn't use IP numbers.
You have a domain name and that's what the traffic is comming from so redirect your traffic using your registrars feature or a free dns management account from one of the few that there are around on the web now to wherever you wish. Then inform the host,... You never know, later in the year they might be offering some really sweet deals or point you in the direction of a mate of theirs that can help make you more money for they see you as a decent person who did the right thing. You say it's only 300 hits per day, but if you consider that can make you money,(and you've already gotten hits to your domain for 6 months now for free and they were probably more than 300 for quite a while... and you would've made money out of approximately 50,000+ surfers,[300x7x4x6]) then do the above and DO THE RIGHT THING by the host! Nice "guys" don't always get shit on... Less your host is a nice "guy" and you decide to crap some more on them. Only way I could think to justify not doing the above or have left a website up was if I had received some really crappy service from them or been one of the 1st few customers to join them when they were new and sites were down for like an hour or two each day or so for a few months,(without them re-imbursing for this major loss)... I would then be considering it recompense,(but I wouldn't exploit it, or use it as a major storage space to pull shit out of, I'd just leave the site till I had thought we square, then delete all the files and inform the host, "I think my account with you wasn't closed off properly, it appears as though it's still active, just thought I should inform you of this" or something along those lines.
