How much $$$ did you use to start your BIZ?

When you started your adult site, how much did it cost you? Are you light years ahead of those good ol' days?

I invested $100 in getting my sited hosted after saving that money using banner ads on free hosts - I had no costs using free hosts.

A month after, I was paying $400, next month $1000 and the rest is history.

I wouldn't be as confident doing that now as I did then (in 1999). Hosts seem more unreliable (they were then too) then before and it seems that nobody gives traffic like they use to. You either have to pay for it or follow so many rules that you can't make money or get traffic to your site anyway.

We bartered livestock back in the mid 90's to get started. Of course we rustled them! I drove the truck and he gathered the critters up.

HAHAHAHA! I love the livestock comment

Rod, I know so many people that got there start like you...working for somebody in the biz and branching out on there own.

I'm only in this business still because it pays slightly better than anything else I can get working elsewhere, but the greatest benefit is working for myself, on my own time, on my own terms. Nothing beats being your own boss

Miguel,

I do remember a few guys starting out just as I was. They were doing a different type of site than me. One guy in particular...I dunno, he was never able to get his site to catch on. He was doing a 'Big Titty' TGP type thing.

He went offline, then came back online with his own domain in 2000 and sent me the addy. It was last updated in April 2001 and is still up. I tried emailing him but no reply. Kinda feel sorry for him, ya know.

I started with $0 using sponser content and freehosting. I bought my first content CD from a company that went out of biz a while ago. It had 3500 pics in 10 categories and they only wanted $35 for it and that included the license. . . no wonder they disappeared

Shit. Am I the only one that spent like 100k to get in this business? Hrmmm. Well, hindsight is 20/20! I guess it's all good now but it sure did suck that first year in business. LOL

I started out after a bankruptcy, flat broke. However, I got through my bankruptcy with a camera. Started selling photos in packs of 10 for $25 mail order. Went online about five years ago when my lab complained my negs were getting beat up from so much processing. At this time I was doing freelance graphic design and copywriting for print media. I was one of the first photographers on the WWW. I charged money to get into galleries of photos of individual girls. When XPics became dominant, I started doing WWW-oriented work full time and rode XPics until it imploded. Three years ago, I opened up my pay site, GirlsDotCom.com. A year after that, I decided to start selling my photography to the world at large, and that's the way it's been ever since. No particular investment other than to pay expenses as they happened.

Sin, did you honestly invest 100k when you started? Where did come up with that kind of cash.

Fuck, if I had that to begin with I would never have gotten into this.

I was fucking broke and I was learning html as I went along.

Truthfully, I wish I could be making as much as I do doing something else. I can't tell anybody what my 'business' is...porn just isn't a nice thing to talk about with the neighbours.

When i started in '97, i paid some scammers by the name of JWS back then, but since then they have went out of business, about 3k to do some scripting and design and make it nice and turnkey for me.

I ran that sucker into the ground within 5 months and went to jail for 1 yr over some other BS, and when i got out, i got a job for about a year. Then decided to get back into porn.

This is when i was a bit older and a bit smarter and my capitol at the time was near 0. I shot some content, whored it out and saved up a little at a time to invest in other small projects, now life is good.

THE END

Standard response: A 12 pack, a buffalo wing, and a prayer.

Real response: Approximately $12K in hardware & software (and miscellaneous) and 6 months worth of time and effort setting up actual physical gear and non-tangible foundation. (remember... *start-up* costs... )

(this estimate has been trimmed to only include actual straightforward startup costs from the day the word "GO!" was laid in stone.... it does not include the time invested in years of practical experience, research, ongoing operating expense or the almighty learning curve. Would be damn hard to put a price tag on all that....)

it's been a damn fun ride so far..... things are ever changing.... and you must be ever adapting.... you gotta ride that fucker like a big ass wave off the North Shore.

(or be eaten by a shark)

Actually, it still is. That's how I started off 6 months ago, then moved to paid hosting from the profits, and even *gasp* bought some content later. I'm not rich by any means (yet) but I'm making a more comfortable living out of it than any job I've had before.

The money that I invested in about the first 8 months was about 100k. I started by buying someone's business... I got defrauded but that's another story. I was 50k into that purchase before my lawyer did his tricks. Most of the money I used to fund my business was the highest risk loan possible - I used my credit cards. Fortunately, I had excellent credit and about 140k available on various Visas and Mastercards - lol!

I did whatever I had to do to keep my business going!!

I started out by spending nothing, as I made a little bit of money on free hosts I put it into domains and hosting.

My only regret is that If I had bought a domain and got a proper host to start with then I would have left my day job six months sooner

For the first few months...nothing...then $15 a month (got kicked off of course) at some paid host for AVS...then $200 for 2 domains at Network Solutions and $60 a month hosting (got kicked off there too)...then I forget how much for some content cds...then I went back to free hosting and didn't spend another penny for a couple years (except on domains).

Actually.. I spend all my money on adult sites. So the correct answer is not $# but 100%, and I started with 0$, ahh.
All my income goes out to expanding. Gladly I have a GF to pay my bills.
