Question About Sirius Satellite Radio in Canada
Now that it is available here - does anyone know if Howard Stern will bee on the list come January? He would be the only reason I would get it - I love the product but the $15 a month without him is not worth it IMHO. I have tried several sources and no one can give me an answer - forget about those fools at Future Shop or Best Buy they know jack. |

				 | He is banned by the Canadian govt.. However he said on his show the signal is still there so if you register using a US address you will be able to hear him. If you use a Canadian address they block out his stations.

				 | Here is the most official information I could find on the subject. he US' FCC does not regulate satellite radio content, but Canada's CRTC does. As a result, Sirus Canada's channel line-up is not the same as the US line-up. Owing to its previous dealings with the Howard Stern show when it was aired on Toronto and Montreal stations, it will not air Howard Stern, or his channels (though it has been reported that at least one major Canadian electronics outlet has been caught trying to sell Sirius Canada services by suggesting erroneously that Sirius Canada will carry Howard Stern's show). Standard Broadcasting CEO Gary Slaight has been quoted as saying "The CRTC, who we are licensed to, would eventually force us to take Stern down, because we have standards we have to abide by in this country when you own a broadcasting licence...When we applied for a licence, the CRTC pushed us about this...[Stern] was definitely a topic of conversation. We [Standard] are a big broadcaster and have to deal with the CRTC on other issues. And the CBC obviously has a cultural mandate to be concerned with." (Toronto Sun, November 16, 2005). |
