Eyewitness: "I Never Heard the Word 'Bomb'"
from time magazine
Eyewitness: "I Never Heard the Word 'Bomb'" A passenger on Flight 924 gives his account of the shooting and says Rigoberto Alpizar never claimed to have a bomb By SIOBHAN MORRISSEY/MIAMI Posted Thursday, Dec. 08, 2005 At least one passenger aboard American Airlines Flight 924 maintains the federal air marshals were a little too quick on the draw when they shot and killed Rigoberto Alpizar as he frantically attempted to run off the airplane shortly before take-off. "I don't think they needed to use deadly force with the guy," says John McAlhany, a 44-year-old construction worker from Sebastian, Fla. "He was getting off the plane." McAlhany also maintains that Alpizar never mentioned having a bomb. "I never heard the word 'bomb' on the plane," McAlhany told TIME in a telephone interview. "I never heard the word bomb until the FBI asked me did you hear the word bomb. That is ridiculous." Even the authorities didn't come out and say bomb, McAlhany says. "They asked, 'Did you hear anything about the b-word?'" he says. "That's what they called it." When the incident began McAlhany was in seat 24C, in the middle of the plane. "[Alpizar] was in the back," McAlhany says, "a few seats from the back bathroom. He sat down." Then, McAlhany says, "I heard an argument with his wife. He was saying 'I have to get off the plane.' She said, 'Calm down.'" Alpizar took off running down the aisle, with his wife close behind him. "She was running behind him saying, 'He's sick. He's sick. He's ill. He's got a disorder," McAlhany recalls. "I don't know if she said bipolar disorder [as one witness has alleged]. She was trying to explain to the marshals that he was ill. He just wanted to get off the plane." McAlhany described Alpizar as carrying a big backpack and wearing a fanny pack in front. He says it would have been impossible for Alpizar to lie flat on the floor of the plane, as marshals ordered him to do, with the fanny pack on. "You can't get on the ground with a fanny pack," he says. "You have to move it to the side." By the time Alpizar made it to the front of the airplane, the crew had ordered the rest of the passengers to get down between the seats. "I didn't see him get shot," he says. "They kept telling me to get down. I heard about five shots." McAlhany says he tried to see what was happening just in case he needed to take evasive action. "I wanted to make sure if anything was coming toward me and they were killing passengers I would have a chance to break somebody's neck," he says. "I was looking through the seats because I wanted to see what was coming. "I was on the phone with my brother. Somebody came down the aisle and put a shotgun to the back of my head and said put your hands on the seat in front of you. I got my cell phone karate chopped out of my hand. Then I realized it was an official." In the ensuing events, many of the passengers began crying in fear, he recalls. "They were pointing the guns directly at us instead of pointing them to the ground," he says "One little girl was crying. There was a lady crying all the way to the hotel." McAlhany said he saw Alpizar before the flight and is absolutely stunned by what unfolded on the airplane. He says he saw Alpizar eating a sandwich in the boarding area before getting on the plane. He looked normal at that time, McAlhany says. He thinks the whole thing was a mistake: "I don't believe he should be dead right now." |

Very sad situation. I really don't have an opinion on it all yet. The news is still coming in and all the stories seem different.
I do know if I was a passenger and someone was running around like a lunatic on a plane I would want him at least taken down.

He did not stop and there is a warning phase before a federal agent will shoot someone in this situation, it is unfortunate that his wife could not stop him but he was a perceived threat and the safety of the marshalls and passengers are of utmost importance, I agree with what they did.

Those mean air marshalls should have given him a hug and engaged him in a meaningful dialogue to find out what the poor fellow's trouble was. Maybe he had a bad childhood and was just acting out. Did they really have to shoot him?

Eyewitness account from a 44-year-old construction worker (mind you his hearing is probably shit from all the years of working around heavy machinery and jackhammers) ...can hardly be accurate. He's deaf.

Truth is.... the time has passed for getting the story correct and, little doubt, it will never be 100% accurate where there are people covering asses for whatever reasons. Especially when it becomes clear the victim was not armed. Its a hard decison to make, but "appears" there was suspicion. That's what happens when ya got law on aircraft with shooters - their preset aim is to find a bomber or terrorist from the moment they took the job. I've personally witnessed some outrageous shit from Miami airport - stuff I've never seen anyplace else ever. That includes AA flight staff who were in no fit state to fly a toy aircraft in their back yards. It's safer to avoid the neurotics surrounding Miami International.

After spending 10 years investigating crashes, shootings, and all sorts of things with Witnesses, I can tell you for a fact that 99.5% of they time they are wrong. Car crash. " I saw the whole thing" Ok what did you see? " there was a loud crash, and I came running out " More then 80% of the time. People like to feel important, and the guy that did the interview with TIME feels like a million dollars right now. He even said that he was sitting mid aircraft, and the other guy and his wife were in the back. How long is that airplane, and how many people were talking on it?

The federal air marshals did what they were trained to do ... and used deadly force - shoot first, ask quesions later.
Not saying this is wrong, etc but rather to point out that having federal air marshals on planes comes a load of risks of its own... What worries me every time I fly is the plane I'm on will be shot down by the U.S. government by mistake - shoot first, ask questions later mentality, while sometimes justified, comes at great risk - for those folks who think the shooting wasn't justified / excessive, just wait until a passenger jet is shot down (some debate that it's already happened once back on Sep-11th over western Pennsylvania) ... Anyways, I hope to heavens the govt shows restraint and never shoots down a loaded passanger jet, but after the deadly shootings of unarmed people in London and Miami, I fear it's likely only a matter of time Ron

seriously, I doubt he wanted to end his life this way.
If he's bipolar, he probably wasn't that lucid. In fact, you can understand his reasoning- Depending on which accountyou want to beleive: Him: Want to get off plane. Him: [I'll say I've got a bomb, that'll get me off the plane quickly / situation turns to shit, he panics] In a planeful of people, when you're panicing, and bipolar, when someone yells ' lie down on the ground ' how the fuck do you know it's you they're talking to.. etc. Deadly force is so great, because ultimately, he can no longer answer back. finally WTF were they doing shooting at someone with a suspected bomb strapped to them? |

Why not stun guns, why not tranquiliser guns, why not a cudgel to the head.
As you saw in the UK, if you fuck up with deadly force, you're fucked. Let's say you're hopping on a plane and get a bee in your suit. You run round, flailing you arms yelling THERE'S A B IN MY SUIT! A B! FUCK FUCK FUCK! Orders to lie on the ground would be mere distractions, next thing you know you're dead, and you've got 'eyewitness' reports saying you said you were a gangbanging terrorist. |

During a war, a lot of people are killed for wrong reasons (or no reason).
Look, this "nutty dude" would have been shot in almost any situation. Imagine he was in your hometown yelling that he had a "bomb" and he started running around. The police would tell him to get down and when he refused, they would have shot him. Even if his wife was yelling that he forgot his medication. Imagine that he came running into your house yelling that he had a bomb (in his backpack). Now, what would you do if he kept coming at you and your family (even though you told him to stop)? Now, imagine that you shoot him in the leg and he hobbles right up to you and detonates the bomb. Now what? It is so easy to say what should happen in any given situation. Especially when you know all of the details after the fact. |

Bad News some one died. Good News the marshalls don't fuck around and have what seems to be a sub-zeo tolerance for bullshit. I hope the bad guys catch wind of that...

some people might need to see the images of the planes hitting the twin towers over again for a refresher course of how we're not fucking around anymore.

this just in........ tommy chong of the famed cheech & chong movies was on the plane that the incident occured on.... authorities interviewed mr. chong, along with all other passengers to find out if they had any pertinent info on the shooting...
... mr. chong said that he did not actually see the shooting, but that some strange man kept yelling "its tommy chong!!!! its tommy chong!!!"
