A bird dog is a gun dog used to hunt or retrieve birds.

Other uses:

* A man who steals another man's girlfriend or date, as in The Everly Brothers's song "Bird Dog", possibly referring to slang terms for women as chicks and other bird-related terms.
* The O-1 Bird Dog, an airplane named for its use, similar to that of bird dogs, in scouting the area (reconnassiance).

a retriever is a bird dog..so car places have coined this term when you go and bring them back a "bird"..in this case a buyer..you are the bird dog..

The term "bird dog" as it is used in the auto dealership market refers to a referral fee, a bonus if you will, for referring someone who buys a car.

I used to bird dog for Birchwood GM here in Winnipeg for several years. Every time I'd bring someone down who bought a vehicle the sales rep would crack an envelope for me, and I'd win anywhere from $50 to $300 bucks.

Used to make a pretty good little side income from that. :D
