I would have to say the following in no particular order:

George Washington
Thomas Jefferson
Abe Lincoln
Teddy Roosevelt
Franklin Roosevelt
John Kennedy

Many of them have done questionable things such as Kennedy and each of the Roosevelt's but for what they each have accomplished and the vision the set forth these would be my choices.

Best since JFK has to be Clinton. Carter would have faired much better if not for the disasterous way he handled Iran hostage crisis.

A quote from long before is a little more correct.

" Only the Dead have seen the end of war! "

And he won the war, though he died right before it ended.

You're talking about the greatest leader we've ever had.
Nixon was great TV and scandal ruined his greatness.
Reagan though people fault him, was one of the few great leaders we've had in a long time. CLinton was incredible charismatic when we needed it.

FDR.

In what way, exactly, is Reagan considered great? Getting away with Iran-Contra? Great at subverting the will of the Congress and violating Constitutional restrictions regarding seperation of powers?

He happened to be in office when the Soviet Union collapsed under it's own weight. That's IT. The USSR would have collapsed if we had had a sock puppet in the oval office, which we basically did. He fucked Bush 1 by taking out short term high interest loans to prop up the economy when he was in office and left Bush to pay the bill. He was non compos mentos for at least half his term with advancing Alzheimer's Disease.

There is a serious effort by Republicans to deify this guy and ram bills thru the legislature renaming every airport and civic building IN THE WORLD after him, but it's all PR. He did NOTHING to deserve it except get re-elected.

Washington was great because he refused to be the new American King. Lincoln brought us through a very difficult time at great personal cost. Kennedy was magnificent against Kruschev, but FDR had the greatest influence on what type of society we would become going forward into the future and he did it despite having a REAL war to prosecute.

Ronald Reagan
Abraham Lincoln
Bill Clinton

The thing that you have to admire about Lincoln is that his cabinet consisted of former opponents and people that utterly despised him. It gave him valuable opposing perspectives and helped to lead to more convicted decisions and actions.
