It's not quite as bad as some make it out to be. The amounts we're dealing with are a fraction of a single percent of our GDP. An equivalent USism would be spending, say, 10 billion building a bridge to nowhere... except that when the cretien liberals spent it, they were doing so to keep the treasonous separatists from gaining popularity and portions of the cash spent got re-routed to unsavory types.
The real reason the government was brought down was because of liberal infighting. P.M.s Cretien (former) and Martin (current) never liked each other much. There was an ugly phase a couple years back where cretien got tossed out on his ear, but he still retains enough information and influence to make life miserable for the federal liberals (including gomery commission-related things). Expunge the cretien influence and the liberals would be in majority again, imo.
On the plus side, so long as Harper remains the waxen-faced Evil Ken Doll figurehead of the conservatives, and so long as Bush keeps fucking things up in a very public way to our south, Canada need not have a fear of the Canadian CRAP taking control (Conservative Reform Alliance Party... yes, they were actually named that once, until whoever did their PR was dutifully fired). Perhaps Harper's replacement will have better luck in the next cycle. :2 cents:
