I've been across several cities trying to find a laptop (they are a scarce item in these parts post Katrina) but even the $700 ones had a DVD burner. This one on closer examination is labeled CD-RW/DVD combo drive.

Obviously
I can't tell you how many times I have been in a store and answered even the simplest tech questions for a nearby customer because the clerk had no clue.

I've never had a laptop. I'm too worried I'll drop it or I'll turn my back and it will walk away.

Actually while shopping the sparse stock around here very few of them were over $1000. Going into the holiday season $900 seems to be the new "magic" price for a loaded laptop at discount centers, with $1200 being the high end. Apparently the stores are all still in post Katrina sales mode, they all have basically the same couple models of a few brands... I haven't seen a really high-end laptop around here since before the storm.

I'm trying to avoid buying online if possible, with my luck I need to be able to easily return it, such as the case today

This is the year (and holiday season) of <$1000 laptops, most manufacturers have a loaded model around 1K (or less with sales/rebates).

Speaking of cheap laptops, have you heard about the $100 laptops coming out next year for students that has wireless and a hand crank for power?

Well, no laptop for me

They had one laptop in the entire building, an opened box return same model as the one I was bringing back... must have been someone else they told it had a DVD burner

I really don't want to order online, but last week I hit every electronics store for 4 cities and there was little to nothing in all of them... I'm sure what little they did have went during after Thanksgiving shopping

Mission accomplished!

So I went to Office Depot which didn't open until noon and bought an HP, paying about $250 more than the laptop I returned elsewhere this morning. When I got it home, I discovered that it was a resealed package. Stuff had sloppily been thrown back in the box, it looked like there was stuff missing, the battery pack had been left in the unit, there was already an administrator account on it called "Office Depot" (it didn't offer me registration or personal setup screens) and there was an error message about needing to restore Windows. I immediately packed it back up and returned it only to find out they had no more other than the display model.

The manager checked their system and found the nearest replacement was in Mobile Alabama! I hit the interstate and headed to Mobile. Although the computer had shown there were 3 there, there was actually only 1, but 1 was all I needed

Just got it hooked up and I like it even better than the one I returned. It's a wide screen. It doesn't have the SD card reader for my camera the other one had, but I got a USB gadget to take care of that.

It automatically picked up my wireless router inside the house and has a great connection (I'm about 20' away in a FEMA trailer). Now I can get back to working on pages late at night (when I do my best work) in comfort (the house currently isn't very pleasant and especially so at night).

The best thing is that if there's a problem I can return it locally

Off to do all kinds of updates, customization, install needed software and remove bundled demos and crap I will never use and then I'll be a happy camper ...literally

Well, it's not like I had much of a selection. Everyone I know with computers lost them in Katrina. Like cars, they are hard to come by here because so many people in so many cities needed replacements. I'm quite happy with this HP... I just got all my updates and preferences taken care of
