Teenager with peanut allergy dies after a kiss

CTV.ca News Staff

A Quebec teenager with a peanut allergy has died after kissing her boyfriend who had eaten a peanut butter sandwich hours earlier.

Fifteen-year-old Christina Desforges died Monday. She went into anaphylactic shock and in spite of being given an adrenalin shot, could not be revived.
Here is the link to the full article. I knew peanut alergies were strong but not this strong!

No kidding. I think peanut allergies are something that just started within the last 50 years and they have gotten worse (more deadly) each decade.

Wow. That's really sad and horrible. The guy should be shot for eating peanut butter if he knew how allergic she was, which I imagine the family knew if they had adrenaline shots around. :/

I doubt he knew. I never heard of getting an allergic reaction from kissing someone that ate something you were allergic to. And in this case they said the sandwich was eaten hours earlier.

Tragic story.

But there's enough content and drama for the CBC to make a 6-hour mini-series out of it, though.

the peanut allergy is EXTREMELY dangerous. I have a 5 year old cousin who is allergic, he is in a "peanut-free classroom." Years ago when I was younger and worked as a camp counselor, a child put peanut butter on the back of the neck of another child who had the same allergy, and had to be rushed to the hospital.

Over the last 50 years distribution and economics did not allow as many access to products with peanuts in them and or they just went unreported to the world at large. Hell several years ago if some kid died due to an allergic reaction to anything, nobody outside of that town would know yet our need for news filler on the hundreds of news outlets lets us all learn of these stories.
The percentage of people who are allergic has not grown and remained steady over the years. The reactions have pretty much remained the same as well, those with peanut allergies always have real bad allergic reactions.

The only real thing that has altered much is that this very small percentage of the population gets a lot of special treatment in comparison to larger percentages of the population that share a different ailment.

Again though they also confirmed it looks more like access to peanuts has risen.

You are failing to distinguish between numbers for the entire population, adult numbers and child numbers. In that article, you can easily find that going by the numbers of one of those studies, the percentage for children was about half that of the general population.

Increased access to peanuts leading to increased reports of allergic reactions to peanuts does not mean that it's just more allergies being discovered. Allergies can develop because of early exposure (or too much exposure) to substances. Because of that, increased access could actually be a cause of an increase in allergies, not just increased allergic reactions.
