?You shall not make gashes in your flesh for the dead, or incise any marks on yoursel

The law that makes tattoos taboo for Jews is Leviticus 19:28, which states: ?You shall not make gashes in your flesh for the dead, or incise any marks on yourselves: I am the Lord.?

Aww shit. You got a problem. I suggest you Ask a Rabbi about your current chances of going to hell.

You'd probably better ask a black one because I think you might not get the answer you want from an Orthodox one.

Ooooh, I did a little checking on AskARabbi.com and it's not looking good:

Quote:
On 8/4/04
risa from west bloomfield asked:

"i am an open minded reformed jew
i have a couple of piercings and want a tatoo that is tasteful, and in fact involves jewish symobls
i mead no disrespect and intend to have the symbols mean positive things about my heritage and beliefs, etx

do modern interpretations allow tatoos now, and is a tatoo forbidden by law or traditions"

Rabbi Roller answered:

"Earrings were known in the patriarchal period. They may have had some religious significance (Gen. 35:4). Nose rings are mentioned in Genesis 24:22,30,47 and Isaiah 3:21 The same term, nezem, is used for both, so the references are often ambiguous (e.g. Num. 31:50; Prov. 25:12). nose rings and earrings. Body piercing for the purpose of wearing jewelry does not seem to be mentioned anywhere in the Tenach.
body piercing is a contemptible way of treating the human body and therefore ought to be forbidden. Part of our tradition teaches us that as Jews we need to be non-conformists. Rather than following the fashion and social trends-- we ought to create the fashion instead.. Please bear in mind that as with anything, life is seldom black and white-- the context of any situation (be it religious or cultural) will have a profound impact on whether a Halachic decision regarding something is either kosher or forbidden. I hope I answered your question
It is absolutely forbidden in Jewish law to get a tatoo (in any language).

This is based on Leviticus 19:28 and is discussed in Mishna Makkot 3:6. Basically, the act of cutting into the body and putting dye inside (i.e. tatooing) is prohibitted.

Maimonides suggests that this is what the idol worshippers did as part of their service to their false gods. Of course, it also reflects profound disrespect for the body that G-d gave us."

screw Leviticus - Howard Stern got some tats - you and him can pal around in the hereafter Juicy.

bunch of hocus pocus - and that was the intent of religion from the very beginning - to scare sheep into behaving 'morally'.

Good question. Hmm, let me dig in the ol' mailbag and see if I can give you some insight...

Shana from Portland asked:

"This is a kind of difficult question and I am not really sure how to ask it or what exactly I am asking. I am a 21 year old female and have become friends with a guy in the same age range via the internet. He was born Jewish (his mother is, his father isn't) but doesn't really practice much of any religion. I on the other hand was born and raised 100% Jewish. Religion is something that is important to my parents, however unlike my father I wasn't raised on going to synogogue every weekend. [size=4]I guess where my question comes in is that this guy has varies body peircings and tattoos and I would like to get some good true information about how this is thought of in the Jewish faith. I have always been informed that it is pretty frowned upon in the Jewish religion and I was always told that you can't be buried in a Jewish cemetary if you have any tattoos or such, so I have just assumed that it was against the religion.[size] The tattoos that he has are all his own art work that he has drawn and they are all very symbolic to him in his life, the piercings are kind of the same way. None of any of this has to do with the public or what is popular to do or not to do. I am really split in all this because this guy is a really great guy and I am afraid I am starting to have feelings for him. I hope that you will be able to give me some good information for me and for me to pass on to him. I am sorry that this is so scattered but as you can tell I am pretty torn right now. Thanks for the help"

Rabbi Costa answered:

"Dear Shana ,

Thanks for your time and question posted at askarabbi.com !

First of all , you have to know that according to the Torah all tattoos and body piecing are considered as serious body self mutilations , therefore I also think this may cause problems in the future for the burial.

But the point now , I assume you are pretty young , is not just the burial matter but the life matter.

How can a guy with tattoos and piercing attend services in a Shul if he?s not intentioned to make Teshuva ? Is he interested to have a Jewish life with a Jewish family or not ? if he is not interested on having a truly Jewish life , this may not be the right guy for you.

Just think that your parents will suffer a lot if you chose a guy they don?t like.

Is not my intention to blame him if he did this mistakes of the tattoos , we all make mistakes. Just you have to tell him that this may cause problems for a fully Jewish life , and you have to ask him what he?s intentions are about religion. If he is not interested on having a life following the right path , you have to tell me that this is a problem for you , therefore the story cannot continue.

Also I may suggest you , always , to follow the good advise of your father and you mother , even if sometimes their opinions may looks wrong to you , very often they are right because they only wish the best for you and your life.

Wishing for you all the best of success and happiness ,

Zay Gezunt
Rabbi David Yehuda Costa

Yeah, I think this is a first for GFY, quoting rabbi's and scripture from the Torah. But today it needs to be done.

Most of the prohibitions in religions are the result of mortality and sanitation problems that mankind faced hundreds of years ago such as don't eat pork, etc.

Many of these prohibitions are being revisited as the religions are now bordering on irrelevant to modern day lifestyles. Moreover, it is a prohibition like no tattoos that is alienating today's youth from the Church.

Be patient and check back in another few hundred years and tattoos will be recognized as ok as long as not satanic......

Tatoos are not Kosher. A lot of religions are going to change in the next 200 years. Some are even going to fade away. But, I can almst guarentee that the Jewish faith will be unchanged and unfaded.

As long as there are Hasidic Jews in the world very few laws will change. If any major changes are made without their consent I can assure you guys that the guy below will put a bullet in someones head. Don't let the funny hat and curly sideburns fool you.

I heard hitler invented a germ warfare that would attack the cut foreskin of males who get circumcised rendering them impotent and osama has it in his hideout.
