TFP photoshoots: an anecdotal experience - GoFuckYourself.com

This may be of interest to those of you who work on a TFP photoshoot basis (time-for-photos exchange).

A while back we worked with a new model, the first photoshoot with her was strictly a paid session. She turned out to be extremely photogenic, and she was a pleasure to work with, so we made an offer to shoot her a second time on a TFP basis, and in exchange we would do a complete modeling portfolio shoot for her own professional use. She agreed...and we went ahead with the portfolio shoot. It was a somewhat elaborate on-location shoot in a very scenic but remote area of the Niagara River gorge - and involved a full day of shooting. It took another two days of post-editing on the images. They turned out fabulous, and I burned them to disk and gave her a copy.

That was my first mistake.

When it came time for her to follow through on the TFP arrangement and do a third photoshoot for us, she was a no-call/no-show. We had set aside the studio time and made some elaborate arrangements for the shoot - and then didn't hear a word from her.

Several days passed, and we made repeated attempts to contact her. It wasn't until three days later before she finally got in touch. She gave us a bunch of lame excuses (she'd been to an all-weekend party, couldn't get a ride, ran outta money, yadda-yadda). During the phone call, she also mentioned that she'd be moving to another city about 7 hours drive away within a matter of days, and didn't know if she'd be able to do the final shoot as per our arrangement.

Naturally, I was rather pissed...since she'd already received HER portfolio photos (my bad for trusting her). But I was determined to figure out a way to collect on the deal we'd agreed on.

Knowing that she was extremely short of income, I told her that we'd do another paid shoot at double the wage of the first shoot...if she agreed to follow through on her TFP shoot obligation. We had no intention of following through with the paid shoot...but the ruse worked. With the promise of more cash money, she showed up two days later and we completed the final shoot.

For the next few days she called us to set up a time for the paid shoot, but we had several excuses ready each time. By the end of that week, her moving date had arrived and her calls stopped. We never heard from her again.

I knew at the time it probably wasn't the wisest move providing her with the portfolio photos before the final TFP shoot, but it was a trusting judgement call on my part. I wanted her to see the portfolio shots, realize how good they were...and that it was well worth her time to complete the deal.

Call it a lesson learned. It all worked out equitable in the end for everyone...but the hassle wasn't exactly fun to deal with.
