All depends on what you mean by free sites - I know of a very large free site that got their start using adwords however they did it with a huge budget and initial layout - if you dont mind taking the chance that your biz model might not work and you have a few tens of thousands sitting around it can be very worthwhile.

it has value, but only if you can buy a real shitload of traffic... so you've got to spend a few tens of thousands of dollars on it..

You will have to pay a minimum of five cents per surfer...

400 surfers = $20. If you can convert at 400:1 with this free site then you can make money on $35 signups. However, if it actually costs twelve cents a surfer, then you are laying out $48 per signup. Unless it is a $50 day you will not make any money...
