Best cover song ever?

Little Wing - SRV covering Hendrix is pretty hard to beat. That song seems like it was written for Stevie Ray...like somewhere in the cosmos someone knew that SRV would cover it one day.

No Quarter - Tool covering Zeppelin is a close second for me.

Let me repeat... A 120 x 60 button and no more that 3 lines of DEFAULT SIZE AND COLOR text.

Eric Clapton also did a pretty good cover of Jimi Hendrix's song Little Wing. While we're talking about Hendrix, Jimi did incredible covers himself of the Bob Dylan tunes "All Along the Watchtower", and "Like A Rolling Stone".

I think Patti Smith did a great cover of Bruce Springsteen's "Because the Night" (actually the Manfred Mann Earth Band did a good cover of Springsteen's "Spirits in the Night" too).

I really enjoy it when a musician/band can take someone else's song, re-arrange it, and then almost make it their own.

YARGH!

Not the best but prolly one of the more bizarre is Ozzy doing "Stayin' Alive",
or The Cranberries doing "Go Your Own Way"

A favorite of mine is Fear Factory doing Gary Numan's "Cars" Primus ' cover of YYZ is pretty cool too.

I recently am listening to "Disturbed's" new album and their cover of"Land of confusion" is amazingly good. Especially in today's political environment, they are ripping on Bush through out the album.. hehehe

some cover songs are even better than the original, but its very seldom. some covers make you like the rather forgettable original

Well, I like when a performer (or group of performers) puts a new spin on something old. I like how Tool didn't really try to duplicate what Zeppelin did with No Quarter as that's just...impossible. But they took the basic elements of the song, and turned it into something of their own.

And on that same note (sort of) I actually like the SRV version of Little Wing MUCH better than the original by Hendrix. Granted, Hendrix was awesome. But SRV playing Little Wing (to me) is what it sounds like when someone makes love to a guitar.

I didn't like the fact that FF did "Cars". hmmff.

Machinehead covering Message in a Bottle was killer.

Codeseven doing Boys of Summer

Manson's cover of Sweet Dreams

Perfect Circle doing Imagine

Snake River Conspiracy covering Love Song

I love lots of covers... thats all I can think of right now. ;)

What new album over the past year doesn't rip on Bush? Country? Ted Nugent maybe?
