1,100 Lawyers Quit Saddam's Defense Team

Wow!!!!

That's A LOT of f.....g lawyers ....

Quote:
About 1,100 lawyers have withdrawn from the defense team of ousted Iraqi leader Saddam Hussein, following the slayings of two colleagues in the past month.

The lawyers say they decided to quit because neither the Iraqi government nor U.S. forces responded to their demands for protection. The lawyers say they will not be present when the trial resumes November 28.

The mass resignations come less than a week after a defense lawyer was gunned down in Baghdad. The bullet-riddled body of another attorney was found in the capital in October.

Meanwhile, the U.S. military says a roadside bomb killed two U.S. Marines during combat operations on Saturday in al-Amiriyah, west of Baghdad.

Wonder how many lawyers on the prosecution side ???

I highly doubt the US government really wants him to have good legal team.. though they could be shooting themselves in the foot if they're not allowing for a fair trial to happen.

They can try to maintain the appearances of a fair trial untill they are blue in the face. I just have a hard time believing a trial can be fair in a country where the entire prosecution is hostile against you.

If they really wanted the trial to be fair, Saddam would be in international court at The Hague.

Good thing; I don't think Saddam could "afford or will" pay them anyway..

You have obviously never been a defendant, or understand the court system.

The prosecution is always hostile towards the defendant. That is their job.

Sure they are. I guess biased would have been a better choice of word.

Interesting. The articles I've read regarding the murders have stated that they have REFUSED protection offered to them.

They are supposed to be biased as well. Have you ever even been in a courtroom?

One of the main ideas behind our court system (I don't know what country you're from) is that the defendant will be judged by his or her peers, while being fair. There is a balance that must be met. If his trial was in the United States, for example, how fair do you really think it would be? Even my more liberal friends would give him the axe.

Odd as it seems, Iraq is probably his best shot.

I'm from Canada actually.

I'm aware of the American jury system and while it does have the occasional problem, it is a good system.

Don't get me wrong, I think that the guy is guilty as sin. But I doubt that anyone in Iraq is capable of remaining impartial and that if the U.S. government wanted to at least keep an appearance of impartiality, the case should be moved outside of Iraq. Possibly at The Hague.

the sole purpose of the trial is closure... not "fairness".
