I'm trying to decide between two digital cameras

These are just for vacation photo type use.

I narrowed it down between the Kodak Z740 and the Sony DSCP200 Cybershot.

They are both more or less the same price. The trade off looks to be that the Sony is lighter (by far) and has a higher megapixel count at 7mp. The Kodak has 5mp but has a 10x optical zoom over the Sony's 3x. They both pretty much have the same digital zoom.

I am not sure which to go for and I need to decide tonight. Does anyone own either of these? Pros? Cons? Battery life?

Go with the Sony Cybershot, probably has a zeiss lens. Higher MP will do you a service if you wish to enlarge later. A very sharp point and shoot cam. As far as zoom, your feet are your best zoom. Move closer!

looked at both but thats apples and pears

the kodak is a SLR type at least the body is, the Sony is one to take on breaks. I dont see myself with that Kodak on the beach in Crete. And the dockingstations for the smaller Kodaks are hell too. My gf has a casio 5mp amazing quality and the docking is like a cig pack small and easy.

If youre lookin for a pro cam then id skip both and spend on a EOS or if youre not look at others, metal casing too id go for, my gf dropped hers twice not a scratch. That kodak will fall apart for sure.

So,that leads me to my ignorant question of the day...do I have to use sony memory sticks or is there a generic version I can use?

I think that those choices are both poor compared to other cameras on the market.

I have a s410. They have a new version of it now, but it's the best all around camera i've ever had and it takes great photos for only being 4.2 MP.

I'd go with Canon over other portable consumer digitals.

Personally, I would go with the Sony for vacation pics. That compact size will mean you always have it with you and you can buy super cheap batteries off ebay for backups. I've had a Sony DSC-P9 for years and have brought it all around SouthEast Asia, Central America and some parts of Europe, and I still use it. It's great!

You have to use memory stick or memory stick duo formats, but it doesn't actually have to be Sony brand. There are some other slightly less expensive makes out there. I usually use Lexar media.

Quick tip: digital zoom is virtually worthless. It's basically the same as upsizing the image on your PC, and then cropping out the middle bit.

They are quite different bodies, one is a compact while the other is a compact zoom (larger zoom range with a bigger lens that doesn't fully retract into the body).

Anyway, what would I know... my camera is literally a brick, it weighs a couple of kilos.

My buddy brought a brand new elph on my Central America trip. He had maybe 30 good pics before something messed up in it and from then on 95% of pics taken were blurry and just crap. We went through all the setting and did extensive testing, but nothing helped. He finally lost it in Panama, which was probably the best thing that could happen to his photographic pursuits. The initial results were great, but I wouldn't buy that camera because of its lack of durability. It could have simply been a defective unit, but I'll stick with my Sony.
