HUTCHINSON, Kan. -- The former owner of a bar in Kansas has been sentenced to nearly four years in prison, for the death of a woman who died of alcohol poisoning.

Prosecutors said Juanita Goodpasture, 31, died after she was served a red, yellow and green concoction called the "Stoplight Challenge."

The $15 drink was so potent that prosecutors said people who bought it were given their money back and a T-shirt if they could remain coherent 30 minutes after consuming it.

Billy Scott, 34, apologized to Goodpasture's family at his sentencing Thursday. He was convicted of involuntary manslaughter last month.

Goodpasture had a blood alcohol content of 0.43 when she was found dead at her home in July of last year.

.43 isn't hard to hit, really... the trick is that is it hard to hit while still standing.

Let's say she had 3 beers an hour for 2 hours... she is already at something like .20 or so... now she has the "special" drink... say it has 6 shots in it... she could easily top out over .40 without even trying... 6 shots would be enough to push her up to almost 0.60 or even higher....

If the drink had 6 shots in it, there was a 0.48 or so right in there. (1 shot same as 1 beer per hour)

An autopsy revealed that McCue had a blood alcohol level of .44 percent. Witnesses said that he drank 24 shots of liquor in less than two hours. He died of acute alcohol intoxication--also known as alcohol poisoning.

Friends had taken McCue out drinking to celebrate his 21st birthday.

I said 6 shots ON TOP OF ALREADY HAVING OTHER DRINKS... 6 shots is (based on the calculations of 0.08 being 1 beer, 1 shot, or 1 glass of wine in an hour) about 6 X 0.08 or about 0.48 - and this all taken in one major shot. DIscount it a bit for spillage, short shotting, etc, and you can easily find 0.3 to 0.4 in this one drink alone.

Combine it with, say, 3 beers in the same hour, and you are looking at BAC of anywhere from 0.4 to 0.6! Remeber too, they found her dead at home. That means there was a digestion period and a "wearing off" period before the death. 0.40 or greater dead would suggest a BAC of over 0.5 at peak.

Because this drink appears to be large and would appear to need to be consumed in a fairly short period of time (for the purpose of a contest), you can safely assume that the girl likely had a HUGE peak BAC rating that would certainly register as dead. Remember, SHE DIED.

0.60 is NOT out of the question, pre mortum. the actual time of death compared to the time of consumption would allow you to pretty much figure out a straight line to her peak BAC. It was certainly a stunning number.

google "dram shop law" and see what it has to say. I remember when I bartended/waitressed in Austin 18 years ago..I had to take a test and get certified and I could be held responsible for serving someone if they left the bar drunk and got into an accident resulting in injury to another.

wrong. its called Water Intoxification (hyponatremia) and it happens quite a bit. Usually happens when someone goes from a state of extreme dehydration and then drinks an extreme amount of water (1-2 gallons) very quickly.
