Have no idea, I thought it was mainly an American tradition. In Sweden this thing has only been a marceting gimmick for the last couple of years. Swedish halloween tradition is to celebrate your dead, but that isn't until next weekend.

Samhain goes back to ancient times. In a nutshell, it's the time of twlight between summer and winter. It is also the time when the veil between worlds is very thin.

I'm not sure how that morphed into our present day Halloween.

Then again, if you look at Christanity as presented in the Bible, I'm not sure how Easter and the resurrection turned into chocolate bunnies and candy eggs.
