Vanilla Sky

Wow I need to get that movie on DVD.

It's an amazing film that gets better each time you watch it.

My fave part has to be when they are inappropriately playing the Beach Boys' song "Good Vibrations".

Wow great flick

One of the reasons that I have to see it again.

I only saw it once.

I also need to see Eyes Wide Shut again

Crazy you mention this... I bought it a few days ago and I watched it last night before I went to bed. It was way better than I remembered it to be.

It's one of those movies where you discover something new each time you watch it. I got Mint Royale's "From Rusholme with Love" in rotation right now

I have it on DVD too. Watched it twice in the theatre because I didn't get it the first time. Lots of people hated it, it's one of my favorites.

It's actually a remake of a european film done a couple years earlier also starring Penelope Cruze but with a european leading man. Never seen the original, but I enjoy Vanilla Sky.

Interesting... do you know what it was called? I guess I could always Google Penelope Cruz's filmography, but that would be too easy.

See the original version ...it is worth it just to see Cruz act in her natural language rather than stumbling over words. Plus, it has 100 percent less Cruise.

I thought Tom Cruise did a pretty good acting job in VS. My favorite part was when they presented him with a mask to wear over his disfigured face. That shit was hilarious.

People say the original is better, but I think they're just trying to be cool. This is definitely one of my favourite movies, one of the few movies that I consider absolutely flawless. There isn't a single thing in the movie I would've done differently. It's brilliant.

As for what it's about, it's not that difficult to 'get' if you pay attention - basically David Aames, the lead character, signs himself up to this new technology (you don't know about this until the end of the movie) that freezes your body in cryojenics (something like starwars) and controls your thoughts, so that you have lucid dreams. You get to pick how you want your life (dream) to be and it also works upon your subconscious to make your life (dream) 'perfect'.

After David's face gets fucked up, because of his crazy stalker Julie Gianni, and he starts going crazy himself - he signs up to that program, and overdoses on pills shortly after.

The 'dream' then picks up the night after he's ditched by sofia at the club, and is replaced with a much better ending than what really happened. Unfortunately even his DREAM gets fucked up (glitch in the program) and that's when things just get really nutty.

After all the nuttiness has you thinking the movie is really about him being a murderer and that sofia/julie are really the same girl, things finally make sense when things are explained at the end of the movie, in a very surreal way, that it was all part of this futuristic program he signed up for. The movie ends off in a peaceful but still very sad way.

I think that everything from the choreography, direction, acting, plot/story, dialogue, to the SOUNDTRACK is perfect. 100% perfect. Everytime I hear that song from Sigor Ros I get goose bumps. It's also a great movie to coerce unsuspecting girls into thinking you're intellectual, sensitive, and deep about and makes them a lot more prone to fooling with you right away

Another movie that I think is equally flawless and also pretty highly acclaimed is Requiem for a Dream. This movie will also toy with a girls emotions and might soften her up for a little fooling around with afterwards. ;)

I love the ending in the elevator as doot doot plays in the background.

This movie made me seek out Freur after long forgeting them and for weeks I would listen to that song daily, 2-3x's a day.

Now we go doot doot!

I saw the original before I saw the remake as I watch a lot of world cinema.

That said, I hope people that haven't seen either don't read too much of your post. Half the fun of films like that are trying to figure it out yourself.

Agreed about the music though. That is a Cameron Crowe hallmark.

"Lucid dreaming" is real and you can train yourself to be able to do it...

In short terms lucid dreaming is dreaming while you're fully aware of that you're dreaming... in the dream you're almost 100% in control of whats happening - and you can at anytime say to yourself "Hey, this is a dream, and I know it... isn't it funny"

Most people have had a couple of these dreams in their lifetime .. dreams where you knew that you were dreaming, inside the dream..

Search the net for lucid dreaming for more info..

The presentation is bizarre. It throws more curve balls than your standard hollywood flick so I did get kinda confused the first time lol. There was also a lot of recurring "themes" that I didn't understand, like the re-appearance of "Benny the dog" which sidelines you the first time you see it because you're trying to think of what the siginificance of it is. Wasn't sure where the dream began the first time either because you only find out much later in the film.

It's a great eccentric love story. Sad but redeeming too (Tom wants to face the world as it is rather than live in a dream forever, even though his true love, Penelope, in real life has been dead for many years).

I may check out the original but I find that foreign movies are usually way overrated.

Of course lucid dreaming is real, but probably not to the extent that it is in the movie.

Surprisingly good movie.. I'd heard it wasn't that good but apart from that had no idea as to what it actually involved, although being a bit of a music fan I always appreciate that side of Crowe's stuff. I was very pleasantly surprised.. I love when that happens.

I don't like Cruise, (although he's started to get less annoying lately) In this movie though his whole persona actually didn't hurt it because really it's not like it jars with the "bratty, rish womaniser" thing.
But I don't think the movie was that hard to understand.. I thought it was all spelled out very clearly at the end - even the Kurt Russell character reiterated it to stomp it home... but thats just me.

opulence - next time post a spoiler warning!

Don't blame him, blame the director. Movies are a directors medium, after all. Theater is an actors medium.

I had to watch Fight Club a second time to really get it all, but not 5 minutes into watching it the second time did I realize what was going on.

In a lifetime there are few things that you'll come across that move you, this movie had a visceral effect that I didn't expect.

Yeah I remember when they went on tour to promote the movie world wide, some people were pissed about it being almost the same.
