I just signed up to coolness.com and uploaded a gallery. I find that none of the pictures were uploaded because they are above the maximum limit which appears to be 80kb. Is there any free hosts that have a larger limit than this? Most of the images were between 150-200kb.

Im just a newbie

I just assumed that is about the average size. It is not my content...its the sample content from teenage pink.

I have no idea what everyone else does, but when I build galleries or sites my full size pics usually end up between 20k and 40k depending on what's in the pic.

Here are a couple tools to help you lower the file size of these images..WITHOUT REDUCING THE PXL SIZE. One is free and the other costs a few bucks.

I use this one. They can spider your site, download the images, compress them, zip them up, and send back to you. You can also upload files to them.

http://www.gifworks.com/
This is a cool app and it supports animated gif compression.

Galleries do best (convert) when international and modem users can download the images quickly. A 200K image file (or 10 200K image files) will take too long to download for your average surfer. 20 to 30K is what you want to shoot for. Page weight should not exceed 100K total if possible.

Thankyou I will check those out. And a question about your popups. When do they pop? If a surfer clicks on one of my links and goes to another site will they get one of your popups? I got a popup before when I clicked one of my to large images and it went to the 404 page...I then clicked the back button and got a popup. So what Im saying is there wont be any popups unless it goes to your 404 page right?

Ok cool. I like the minimal ads. And they are much cleaner looking than some of those dodgy ones like smutserver etc.

I'm a fuckin' newbie but from where I sit it looks like this, see....

If the thumbs in a gallery click through to nasty little overcompressed 16-color images twice the size of the thumbs, that look like bad vid-caps from a 1980s VCR that's not tracking -- like so many galleries do -- you will have an uphill battle selling the sponsors allegedly responsible for that content.

Now, that said, it's no trouble at all to deliver a large high quality picture for well under 80k, with just a little bit of tweaking. My default image viewer/mangler is a freeware thing called IrfanView, but it does the job just fine.

Coolness has caught me trying to upload a couple of files that were too big -- but usually it was the result of me having set Jpeg compression to 80 for some other project, and forgetting to set it back to 55 or 60.

I've seen some guys using 150K images on a paid host & they had recips to worldsex, elephantlist etc..
They must be getting reamed in the ASS when they get the bandwidth bill.

Many pictures with a default size of 80-100kb often times look blurry & real low quality if you shrink them to 30kb. If you buy content, make sure the orginal file size is not massive or it won't srink very well.

I usually keep my pics around 70K. Occasionaly some of the pics will compress more and still look good, but for the most part, 70 is the magic number for me.

I not only compress images, I resize them too. That cuts down the file size.
