People of the world, lets face the facts: Most "Americans" are your saviors.

Why do ?Americans? feel as though they are personal world saviors because they pay taxes? Or because they were born into wealth, they must elaborate on all the world?s shortcomings. I was born into low-income, quickly my family rose into a more suburban, middle-class lifestyle. I have no idea what being born into poverty would be like; therefore, I shut my mouth.

?Americans? seem to think impoverished Africans are ?lazy? and deserve what they get. Even when our own are in need (New Orleans), we seem to judge how different it would be if we were in the same situation; of course you can always know how you would react if you were born into poverty, had no education and a category 4 hurricane swept your little trailer away.

So insightful!

The world did not begin with ?America,? nor will it continue on revolving around ?America.? Read a little history and you will see that the writing is on the wall.

I have said this before, ?Americans? should not be allowed to babble on (nor vote) on world issues unless they have stamps on their passport that are more extensive than Cabo. Just because you have stayed at a resort in Puerto Vallarta, it doesn?t mean you have ?seen the world.? Reading books on other places will only get you so far. Living in Idaho all your life as a Republican really doesn?t justify some esoteric knowledge that all others across our vast oceans are not privileged with. Just because your neighbor is "half-Pakistani" and you let him borrow your lawnmower once, it doesn't make you cultured. Your parents paying for you college education or you deferring government education loans your whole life doesn?t deem you ?successful.?

And remember, YOU didn't free anyone in Iraq or Vietnam unless YOU put on some boots and strapped an automatic weapon to your shoulder.

So the next time ?Americans? get the urge to babble on about the world, they should book a flight and go see all of America. This includes: Chile, Peru, Brazil, Argentina?etc.

I love living in The United States, I just don?t understand how so many people essentially are aloof to where they stand.

That was my rant for the day, carry on.

Via normal elections. I should have been more precise, or less precise? haha.

You elect a president because of "world views," .....

Okay, I hope we have a communication breakdown here . . . are you suggesting that you cast your vote based on what people in other countries might want?

Because America is the only superpower in the world and makes a lot of decisions that affect the world; thus, Americans must take into account the President's world views.

Most third world countries don't have any global influence, that's why you don't hear that issue in most other countries political elections.

I am being sarcastic for the most part.

For example, one might vote on a president that is aggressive in staging war in other countries, etc. I should remove that comment, it was intended as sarcasm, rather than a serious plan. More a shot at the fact that too many "Americans" feel that the world should revolve around our lifestyle (Religion).

I agree with Pleasurepays though.

Exactly. I vote for the democrats because I like blue. I don't really care what candidate is up there. I just happen to think blue is pretty. If the president has a staunch "fuck-euro" stance, that's fine I didn't vote for him because he's a good diplomat... I just like blue.

You're a dumbass.

I tend to disagree Brad. I think he is right for the most part. Staunch Republicans are just that, same with Staunch Democrats.

"Americans" tend to do the same thing? Agree or disagree?

They always comment on other countries beliefs?

I should have left out the voting portion, it confused my point.

America donates a huge amount of $$$ to just about every other country and has one of the most generous welfare programs for our own citizens. That money comes from taxpayers. It's a reasonable assumption for the average Joe to believe he's doing something to help those less fortunate in the world.

For the most part, I don't think Americans give a damn about what Canadians, Euros, Asians, Indians, Africans, Kiwis, Aussies or anyone else does with their political process.

Hell, if GFY is any gauge, the citizens of those countries/continents don't get as involved in discussions about their politics as they do about our politics. They can't help but jump into a discussion about what we are doing, but they never seem to talk about what is going on in their own house.

The REAL question is, how many people that vote actually attend demonstrations or protests?

True Americans protest and demonstrate resistance.

From an outside POV, I don't see that America is doing a very good job to help it's own. Forget New Orleans, decisions made in the US are almost inevitably geared toward keeping the rich wealthy and the poor in poverty.

America may be the home of democracy but it sets a bad example - Bush comes off as merely a tool of large corporations and when you see so many examples of pandering to big business, it's pretty clear the power is not in the people's hands. (Remember the lift on the assault/automatic weapons ban? How in any way, shape or form did that "help" anyone except the companies making and selling them?)

Again, just an outside view based mostly on what the (biased) media reports, but hey, sometimes looking from the outside in makes the truth much easier to find.

Wrong answer. I personally know many people from Europe, Australia, New Zealand that have snuck into our country hoping to stay. Some have even gone through the trouble of getting married so they can get a green card.

(Remember the lift on the assault/automatic weapons ban? How in any way, shape or form did that "help" anyone except the companies making and selling them?)

Again, just an outside view based mostly on what the (biased) media reports, but hey, sometimes looking from the outside in makes the truth much easier to find.
The "poor" in America are much better off than the poor in other countries. It's hard to find someone who doesn't have at least 1 color TV and if you're truly poor, you get free food, free housing, free medical care, free education, etc.

There are WAY too many stories of people starting from nothing and being successful in the US (and many of them immigrating from other countries) for it to be possible that you're stuck in poverty.

GFY is an American-based webmaster forum that aheres to American-based legal requirements...so I'd say its only natural for there to be predominantly American-based political discussions.

Canadians are directly impacted by American politics simply because of the geographic and social proximities - so it would be foolish for us NOT to observe and comment on American politics. Not to forget that although our content is Canadian-produced, some of our websites have American-based hosting.

Omg - ok so how many? give us a break down too....

I've not met a single European, Australian or Kiwi that would rather live in America. Australia and NZ are far better places to live.

Both of your points are simply untrue.

When it comes to international aid, the US is a relatively stingy country. Its foreign aid as a percentage of gdp is much lower than that of most wealthy countries. Furthermore, most of its foreign aid is actually aid to strategic partners like Israel, which up until 3 years ago received more aid than the entire continent of Africa (I don't know if that has changed by now, but I haven't seen the latest numbers yet).

America only has one of the most generous welfare programs for its own citizens if you exclude most of western Europe from the comparison, which makes it a rather empty statement.

Yes - and you'll find many Americans living in Australia too.

There are people on this board that I know are here on a green card, however, I doubt they would appreciate me outing them.

Wow. Are you really a political science major? Have you really taken "American Government 100 and 200? Holy shit! Give me a second while I drop to my knees and worship your holiness. I'm glad your 12 months in what, Orange County, have taught you everything you'll ever need to know about Americans.

Los Angeles, California is not Springfield, Illinois. They may as well be different countries.

I agree. The only time I talk about my own government here in Canada, or my provincial government here in BC, is when I'm venting. Our government is fucked beyond all recognition, and most of us recognize this. Likewise, I feel the same about the American government, be it federal or state. I jump in on american political discussions because I have a hard time comprehending why so many people down south don't feel the same way about their shoddy government, as i feel about mine. Governments are evil. I don't care how nice and friendly a countries government may be. It's still evil. What has government done? Turn people against one another, cause hatred that leads to wars and trade embargos. And all war and trade embargo's lead to is more death and more hate. And death and hate lead to more wars and trade embargos. It's a viscious circle that will not end until our species ceases to exist.

Its kind of funny you bring this up.

The other day my friend and I were talking about various countries to live. And based off of what I read here on GFY, Christ I didn't think anyone wanted to move to the United States. So I made some comment like "Germans don't want to come here". He just came back from Germany about 6 months ago and his reply was "yes they do, they think the United States is great."

I was shocked I guess. Of course, what he said totally depends on the group of people he was spending time with which happened to be people in their early 20's. That just goes to show you how the people posting here on GFY or anywhere really have only one opinion of many representing their country.

Another thing I find interesting... I always hear so much bad about our country. People complaining, whining, bitching, whatever. Then you go out to maybe a baseball game, a concert, a show of some sort... and up front somebody stands up and says the Pledge, waves a flag, lends a supportive word to the military, and the crowd goes crazy. People stand up, clap, cheer, nobody is sitting down. Where are the haters then? Or is it just another instance of group mentality, just like the "hate rallies"?

Nobody really "likes" their government.

Its actually pretty hypocritical. I can complain about my government, but you can't. :-) People complain about the government ALL the time, even me, but I will still defend it against other people calling it "evil". I expect you to do the same, and I'm sure you do, you just don't realize it.

I've never actually defending my government during an argument. If someone points out how my government put 1 billion dollars into the garbage chopper in the sink, in a failed gun registration program, I'd agree that it was quite retarded. If someone laughed at our meth addicted car thieves who steal 100 cars, attempt to fire guns randomly out windows, cause several traffic accidents while doing 90 mph down a city street, and then get sentanced to 3 years in jail, but get out after 9 months, I'd agree that our justice system and the people who come up with laws and punishments are also retarded. I'd also agree that our prime minister (both current paul martin and previous john creten) is a turd and should be fired. The only thing Canada has done that I'm proud of is its involvement in ww2, and its peace keeping operations around the world. Other than that, Canada is about as usefull as a broken foot. But do I still love living here? You bet. I can put up with a shitass government, if the trade off is friendly people, and a high standard of living.
