At the same time, police attitude is totally different and they probably get "respect" just by being "normal". I accidentally reversed into an unmarked police car here.. It had a load of GPS equipment installed and kinda screwed bits of that up. First thing that happens is we all introduce ourselves and handshakes. Next I tell em I fucked up and how much to sort it. Then we run around getting parts and to a respray shop for 3-4 hours and they are on the road again. Beats all the "official" bullshit!! |

it is a fact that a reasonably fit attacker who begins running at someone can cover a distance of 21 feet before you can draw a weapon and fire accurately. there is a drill in law enforcement called the tueller drill which demonstrates this... so as far as her hand on the gun, i can understand that.
as to why she would not allow you to push your car off the road, i have no idea. as far as the verbal abuse, she was out of line. newbreed prolly forgot about that part when he put up the $100 bet. because that would be a violation of procedure due to the fact that you werent being too terribly beligerent, and the verbal assualts on her part may have upset you further, escalating the sitchy-ation. i dont hate cops. i respect the job they do... i know cause i went thru 2 years of schooling for it, and did a few ride alongs... cops deal with lots of shit. think about it, if poeple werent being fuckin stupid then cops usually wouldnt be having to deal with them (except with normal stuff like traffic related contacts)... but thye are expected to be professional no matter how much shit they deal with... that is one of a few reasons i decided being a cop wasnt the job for me. hand on gun, as long as she didnt undo the thumbsnap, i can understand....... with the verbal abuse she was outta line as long as it wasnt 'verbal judo' used to try and make you comply with her commands. basically you and newbreed both have valid points. |

It's a hard one - cops who I have dealt with have been both bad and good (some so close to being retarded it wasn't funny). I think as someone else has mentioned they seem to exert way too much force/law for minor things.

call them any name you want, but the police are not paid to lose fights. If it takes 1 cop or a hundred, they will win the fight.

removing the thumbstrap is only one of the safeties. Most holsters have 2-3 safeties, it still will not come out with the thumbstrap off. you still have to press the weapon down and rock it back to get it out and sometimes remove another strap.

Interesting thread so far. On the cop's side of it, she most likely wasn't sure if you were trying to steal the car or if you were it's owner. There may have been pre-existing reports of auto thefts in the area, causing her to be wary of you.
On the other side of it, it would be nice if all cops could do their job from the standpoint of serving the public and the public's interest and leave the ego and the control freak thing at home. Fact is she could have dealt with this incident quite well without the mouthy "I'm the man" attitude and just asked to see your license and registration/proof of ownership and then offered to help instead of what she did. Some cops are pretty good people who do their job effectively while knowing when to bring out the attitude and when not to. But far too many other cops seem to put on the uniform and then think they're tough because they have the uniform on. For every story of heroism and bravery in the face of danger etc where cops have excelled there are two where cops have offended people, abused their power, abused their position, and/or downright shit on citizens for their own gain or amusement. That includes everything from snide attitude-filled orders and comments that are ego-driven, right up to twisting and stretching the law to suit their own agendas. Sadly, like in any field, the bad ones ruin it for the few good ones. I've known many cops, some I even consider friends, but too many other's I've known or been around scored an A+ on the Ego 101 part of their training. |
